| Pension suspended Friday the news came silently. I went online to verify the pension payment - nothing had hit my bank. So, I went to the embassy Monday at 9 am, promptly. I was the first codger on line for the weekly no appointment Federal Benefitsservice. The person who served me said that she woul send an email to the /buenos Iares embassy (which has a fulltme Federal Benefits officer) and would notify me by cell phone when she had a reply. That was Monday at 930. It is now Wednesday, with not a word of reply. Meanwhile, hours pass, days pass, bills continue due. There was acouple there too whom I met at the expat lunches. Someone had told them that it takes about 30 days to get benefits restored. I am beginning to think it may take 30 days after the "reason" for the interruption is discovered. The embassy/consular person did suggest that I register on line with the embassy to avoid further problems. So, I tried. Put in the passport number, the address, the secret question to verify identity, everything they asked. It was shameful, I admit.but I need the income. The last laugh was on me: No way would the embassy's system allow me to input either an email or a phone number! So, what can I do? go back to face the humiltiation twice again of emptying pockets, taking off my belt, etcetera, to get five smiling minutes of niceness withoujt answers next Monday? Soc. Sec. Adm., Off. of Intl. Operations, Baltimore;: 410-965-9418. Depending on who "picks up" the call, they may or may not be able to help you. Itīs a call center and some people are more knowledgeable than others. I got better assistance from Valeria Martinez at the Social Security Office in Buenos Aires, AR. I donīt know how to space the numbers, but here they are: 00 54 11 5 777 4523. The only problem is she only takes calls at certain times, I donīt remember what hours. And I think sheīs off on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Otherwise, sheīs very helpful. Best of luck! I hope this isnīt the harbinger of bad news from the U.S.! Don't know why it was cut because I have received no notification, but, miraculous to report, today the payment was in the account, with payee noted as Social Security (a new notation; always before it was US Treasury). I'm very glad to hear that your gov has finally paid you.The Brits pay me a small pension but they wanted to charge me extra for paying it into a Uru bank so I collect it in a UK bank account. Its only a pittance so I let it accumulate and spend it when I go on my holidays :-) |
