Home security and full time housekeeper
| Home security and full time housekeeper We are hopeful that we will be moving to Uruguay in the not to distant future. We were wondering if a full time housekeeper and gardener (couple) would be a good choice for the security aspect? We considered a condo but found the common fees were $750 a month (3br-3ba 193m2) which seemed rather outrageous to us. Also interesting to note that the price was listed as $195, 000 and as soon as we made an inquiry it jumped up to $238, 000. That canceled any interest we had in the place. We actually prefer living in a house but have concerns over security. we have to be gone for several months at a time until we sell some property in Thailand. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Norm |

I think your choice is the correct one. In Uruguay we call that kind of housekeeping / houseguarding couples the "Caseros". If your house is big enough to house a couple without interfering in your own way of life, that will asure you the house keeping (cleaning, cooking, gardening, home reparations) or at least part of it, and will also be a good solutions if you are away for long periods. It is much more secure than hiring people that come just to do the job and then goes back to their homes. |

Here in more rural parts it is usual for most larger detached houses to have a second smaller house on the plot. I have a number of elderly neighbours (mostly Uru-Swiss) who go to Europe in our autumn and return the following spring. The ones without dutiful families usually employ full-time caseros who look after them when they are here and the property /pets /garden /etc while they are away. |

Norm, do you already has an idea in which part of the country you would like to live?My first advice is come for an exploration trip before buying anything. You can do by internet a pre selection of houses to see once you are here. Once you find something that you like, you can walk around and ask the neighbors about their experience in this topic and how they prevent them. I would say that having “caseros” is quite common here if you have a farm (or similar in the countryside) or in Montevideo –as Alberto already mention- if you have a house big enough. I would say –for you to have an idea-, that people I know that has “caseros” has houses that cost about 1 million dollar. What people with houses about $200.000 usually has is alarm and bars in the windows. In some residential areas, some people also have a 24hs guardian paid by a group of neighbors. Thanks for your responses. we do plan to spend some time there before making any decisions or commitments. We are not sure which area we will settle in but feel that Montevideo is a bit to crowded for us. We would prefer to be near the coast as we enjoy the ocean and the beaches. We have a housekeeper here in Thailand and my wife is sold on that aspect of retirement. Since we can own the land in Uruguay (can't in Thailand) a house would be nice. Being able to get a passport after 3 years is also big plus. Got a bit off track there, sorry. So can anyone give me an idea what it cost for live in caseros or a part time housekeeper? In Thailand it cost us $300USD a month for full time but not live in. She does a lot of shopping for us and saves us a bunch as she can get much better prices than we can. Norm & Luanna |

Neighbours tell me that a full time live-in casera costs about 10K to 11k U$S a year in this rural area at present including paying BPS and the various extras required by law here. The Kingdon of Smiles is a much cheaper place than the ROU in my experience. I'm a former resident of Phu Kradung (Loei province.) |
