Moving

Thank author of this post/commentI read through the "things to bring." I would like to ask a few follow-up questions on moving from the US

1. does it make sense to shipping major appliances (refrig, Wash/Dry, Wine Fridge)?

2. How about machinery such as generators?

3. anyone have an idea on moving costs from the US? We are more or less shipping from Seattle, Washington.

4. Perhaps this is on another thread, but how about shipping our used car from the US? Say a car that in the US is worth about $10, 000. We once had a used Volvo we paid $4K for and it was a great car. We sold it a year later for $5K. It would be this type of good and affordable used car we would want to ship.

It seems like the idea would be to ship all those most expensive things to get here.

5. Is there anything akin to storage units (e.g. Public Storage) in Montevideo for storing a car during winter months)?

thanks. Your answers will help us with the $$ involved with the move.

Remember it is 220 Volt, 50 Hz here. So keep that in mind with any large appliances. You can easily get transformers to change the voltage, I paid about 1, 000 pesos for a 1, 000 watt transformer (about 4+ years ago). Changing from 50 hz to 60 hz, if needed is a different matter entirely.

Forget about used (or new) cars.

I moved with a couple suitcases.

Importing a used car is an absolute no-no. If you want a car here you'll have to buy one locally at an eye-wateringly high price (unless you are a returning Uruguayo where special rules apply.)

Importing anything with a gas/petrol engine is not allowed to be included in your freebie "household goods" allowance.

I moved from a smaller house/farm in the UK to a bigger house/farm here so I brought all my furniture/junk/tools etc in a 45 foot container. It cost me 2.2k U$S from Suffolk to MVD and 3.2 U$S in fees/charges/ clearance/transport etc from MVD to Colonia Valdense though 1k U$S of this was incurred because the law was changed while my container was at sea which required that I prove that I was living on two continents simultaneously :-)

If you do decide to move "heavy, " the things I've been unable to find here are ultra-comfy sofas and chairs as well as quality curtains. Quality kitchenware is expensive here as are most quality items. The drawback of bringing electrical household appliances from the States are the voltage/Hz differences and the possible difficulties involved in getting any spare parts that might be required.

I see on TV, advertising from "Container USA" they are dealing with Uruguay.

You can get an idea of prices. Also there may be Brokers (They paid for the Container) and later they charge you for the space you are using.

My first time moving back to Uruguay I moved 3 big items and I filled them with everything I could, you pay for the size not weight.

Call the Uruguayan Consulate and get official information.

You can buy in the States Electronic items with 220 volts in places like New York, Miami or online.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 1988395521
