Insurance
| Insurance In all the blogs I have read about cost of living in Uruguay, and maybe it has been talked about farther back than I have read at this time, I have not read a comment on the cost of house insurance, auto insurance, renters insurance, liability insurance, and property taxes, as part of the cost of living. I'm sure it will come into play sooner or later for all us aspiring expats.Does nayone have a formula to figure these or know of a certain rate per thousand that one can use to figure this? Is there a deductable and if so, what is it (in US$, pesos, or a percentage)? Any info would be great. Thanks Terry |
| It is often difficult to get the cost of property taxes... I saw an apartment the other day. They were asking US$110, 000 and the real estate agent to my surprise said the property taxes were $9, 000 pesos (US$400) a year. That apartment was located in Pocitos.Usually when you ask what the property taxes are you get a blank look or are told that its not much. Part of the problem is using the correct words. Fire insurance for an apartment in the US$150, 000 range seems to run a little under US$200/year. I hope auto insurance is never a question as life without a car is so easy and pleasant in Montevideo! |
Comment #203/12/09 19:13Rural east Colonia departmento | It costs just over 400 U$S/annum to insure my aged Nissan Sentra comprehensively in east Colonia. I'm in the process of building/re-building a non-inflammable house and I use my dogs, nosey neighbours, sabre and half pike to keep any burglars at bay :) I can't get contents insurance as we lack a local security company with monitored alarm systems and I really don't want bars across my windows. Rural property taxes are based on the land value and ignore the house altogether. I pay just under 2000 pesos/annum (83 U$S at current exchange rate) but it makes no difference whether I have no house or a half scale model of Buckingham Palace on the chacra... the taxes remain the same. |
