Depends on where you live in Uruguay. Punta del Este is the best place for living unless you like city life then Montevedeo is better. We have a place in Punta. Great standard of living. Probably your cost of living is about the same in Uruguay as it would be in Costa Rica. You can buy a one bed older flat on the beach for 75-100 USD in Punta del Este. That seems reasonable to me. Houses in Punta are 100 USDon up for what I think is very good quality. You can spend $1 million too for an apartment is you want. Surf the web and you'll see what's on offer. I bought my place from Reynolds in Punta. They speak English, are used to
US standrds. Ask for Alan. If you are interested in renting a great place two blocks from the ocean on a month to month basis, you can ask them about my place. Buying an auto there is expensive, don't know how it compares with Costa Rica, but the taxes are high. Good luck.

There is also a small beach comunity named Atlantida (30 miles from MVD and 65 miles from Punta)where you could purchase a 4 bedrooms , 2 bath , barbacoa , front and backyard , carpot or 1 car garage for less than USD$90.000 . Another thing to take into consideration is your medical insurance , and being 100%covered will cost you around usd$140 at month or less (you could get it for less also)
Hope it helps

Hi Jim if you are seeking for place to retire i suggest that you choose a place in Asia. Asia offers not only a low cost living but also rewarding scenery. The people in Asia are known for their hospitable reputation. Some suggested Asian country are India, China and Philippines.
Here is a statement from an Expat retiree in Philippines:
iving, Traveling and Retiring in the Philippines as a foreigner or "expat, " is a dream come true for me. Beaches, ocean and mountains are all at my doorstep. The sun almost always shines here, where I live, out of the northern typhoon belt.
Almost all Filipinos and Filipinas adore foreigners, expatriates, (expats) who live here or retire here. And they welcome and appreciate or just tourist too, the only English speaking country in the world were foreigners from any country are respected and admires.
It all depends on what and where the retiree wants.
I live in a modest castle/building site midway between MVD and Bs As in a prosperous area of small farms 5kms from Colonia Valdense and 6kms from the Rio Plata.
Excluding housing costs (I own the farm) and foreign travel, the two of us live well on 40, 000 $UY per month (approx 1725 U$S.)

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 2513
