Treatment of Uruguayan Dairy Cows

Do any of you know how dairy cows are treated in Uruguay (i.e. the ones that provide the milk we buy at the grocery stores in Montevideo)? Are they allowed to roam the fields, or are they confined like they are in the U.S. dairy facilities?

I'm happy to report that Colonia cows wander the pastures and do what cows usually do... that is graze for 8 hours, ruminate for 8 hours and sleep for 8 hours each day :-)

In wintertime when grass growth is limited they are usually given access to silage (pickled grass) and/or ensilaged sorghum (pickled sorghum) as well as hay but in every case I can think of they live outdoors and only come inside for milking.

Land is plentiful, buildings are expensive and current producer milk prices are low so I expect our low input dairy culture to continue.
