One of the things that tends to be lacking in Uruguay food wise (at least when dining out) is hot, spicy food. Many restaurants do have Tabasco sauce, but at others your left with just a dash of black pepper.A few weeks ago while eating lunch at Rocco's the cook brought me my food and I asked for some pepper. He asked if I liked spicy food and of course I answered in the affirmative.
The cook said he would be able to scrounge up some hot peppers for the next time. And, indeed he did. Medium hot anyway... not enough to sweat and turn red, but enough to add a good spicy flavor to the meal.
It seems the cook took the spicy food initiative a little further too. They cooked up some hot sauces and have them in little bottles now. So you can spice up your food with their unique flavors.
I don't know if they'll keep making the hot sauce for ever, but for now if you are looking for something a little different... don't be afraid to ask for Salsa Picante at Rocco's. And, tell them TotalUruguay.com sent you.
