| Restaurant Reviews/Opinions I recently received this message from one expat who has recently arrived in Montevideo. She and her family tried out a well known spot called Rocco's Bar on 21 de Setiembre but they didn't have a very nice experience:"My family and I were recommended to this establishment [Rocco's Bar] from the front desk staff at Punta Trouville hotel. Unfortunately, our experience was not favorable. The food was "ok", nothing to write home about. The waiter, who we found to be a little "slick" and who insisted on answering all my questions in English, (even though he clearly understood my Spanish) brought us our change 500 pesos short. So, we then scrutinized the check and found that he had added two extra items onto the bill. I guess he figured we were dumb tourists, but he tried to rip off the wrong tourists....we lived in NYC for 12 years. Needless to say, we won't be going back or recommending Rocco to anyone. It gave us a bad taste on our first night in MVD." Its important for expats and travelers to share their good and bad experiences about bars, restaurants, hotels and general services in order to help each other out. Are there any places in Uruguay that you would strongly warn people against or highly recommend? |
| "Common Experience?"
First of all at Rocco's Bar, I find that the staff enjoys practicing their English with native speakers. They also seem to enjoy helping native English speakers practice their Spanish. On the matter of being overcharged or short changed, I don't find it to be a common to be a common experience for me in Uruguay. The last time I was short changed (and the only time I can remember) it was a few pesos at Western Union. I asked for my change and they refused to give it to me. When I returned later and spoke to the manager I was given the correct change and then a discount I was also entitled to and hadn't received the first time. I always make it a point of reviewing my check before paying and counting my change. That seems to be the best way to avoid a bad experience. I can't imagine not speaking up about my change being 500 pesos short! |
| "Rocco's Bar - whats all the fuss?"
I think I've lost count of the number of expats who ask me if I have been to this place...I don't really understand why, it never struck me as anything special. Its a small, average place and because I don't eat out that often I tend to save it for special treats and therefore look for something unusual and different.A couple of expats have written reviews or mentioned it on blogs...I'm starting to wonder if it is frequented by more expats and travelers than locals! |
| "This really happened!"
We are the abovementioned family whom they attempted to rip off. Of course, we pointed out the 500 pesos error immediately and got that $$ returned. We then figured we'd better scutinize the entire bill and found that they'd charged us for beverages we hadn't ordered. The waiter seemingly forgot all his English when we pointed out these two "errors" and didn't offer any apology in any language. Needless to say, we've been checking all our bills carefully since. |
| "The owners..."
Did you bring it to the attention of the owners? If nothing else you could send them a message on facebook. |

I'll make a point of trying it out when next I visit MVD. |
