Recepies from Uruguay

Hi! Saw this forum and got interested in this subject. I lived in Uruguay a few years ago and the best of my memories is related to the food. It is a rich and varied selection of different "currents" of gastronomy. there is the Spanish, the native, the local mixed culture. The best of all worlds. Look at the web page and give it a try, you may live in Arkansas, but ytou can give it a try. Won´t be sorry... Good luck.

Thank author of this post/commentThat page isn't very helpful at all!

Personally I don't think the best thing about Uruguay is the food, I definitely wouldn't say they're up there with France or Italy for their cuisine. The strangest thing is that despite having such a long coastline seafood doesn't seem to be very popular (its been passed up instead for red meat).

Uruguayans are quite traditional about their foods however and they do have some very "typical" dishes. Empanadas seem to be a staple (these are pastry pouches with fillings such as meat, cheese, olives, onions, or sweet fillings).

There's the obvious one which is the Uruguayan Asado or Parilla - this is meat cooked over smouldering wood...its good but so much red meat has caused a lot of high blood pressure, hypertension and high cholesterol among Uruguayans.

There also the famed chivito which is like the mother of all hamburgers (but made with a steak!).

And of course you have dulce de leche (a bit like caramel) you'll find this in almost every dessert here!

Thank author of this post/commentAnother contrast is that if you eat out you might think that there is no such thing as a fruit or vegetable... yet there are wonderful fruit and vegetables stores throughout all the neighborhoods.

What do you mean Lee? Are the vegetables they serve in restaurants not nice? Do they serve salads at all? Is it difficult to be a vegetarian there do you know?

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 2439245163
