In search of a cheap lunch in Pocitos

Thank author of this post/commentWhen I moved from Costa Rica to Uruguay 5-1/2 years ago the price of restaurant food seemed to be a bit of a shock. In Costa Rica, a normal lunch for two was about US$5. US$10 for two was an outrageous price.

In Montevideo lunch seemed to come in at about US$$7.50 per person. ie: roughly 3 times the price. However, if I left it at that, the comparison would not be fair.

In Costa Rica lunch was a big plate of rice and beans with a minuscule quantity of other stuff. In Uruguay lunch was a large steak with a side dish. So the bottom line was in total, lunch in Uruguay was a much better deal.

Fast forward 5 years. I find most of the lunch specials in Pocitos run about $250 (pesos) or about US$12.75. That usually includes a main plate, dessert and drink (soda, water or wine) and maybe a small salad or appetizer.

Here are a couple examples:

Fellini's (corner of Benito Blanco y Jose Marti). Weekday lunch special "menu executivo" $250 pesos (no cubiertos). Small salad, main dish, drink (soda, water or wine) and dessert. A complete filling, delicious lunch. Remember to ask for their good customer card ("trajeta") and each weekday lunch special you have gets a punch. 5 punches and the next one is free. That brings the effective price to $208 pesos or so. Not available on weekends or holidays.

Don Trigo (corner of Gabriel Pereira y Pedro Berro). Weekday lunch special "menu executivo" $250 pesos. Main dish, drink (soda, water or wine), dessert, and coffee. Again, a delicious filling meal. WeekEND specials are more expensive and don't include dessert, ask for specifics!

Now its your turn. Cheaper or delicious:

Thank author of this post/comment"Menu Tips"

After looking for a reasonably priced place to grab lunch with Pete yesterdays a couple of "common sense" ideas came to mind. When reviewing a menu, be sure to look for mention of the "Cubiertos" which is life a cover charge and can be per person or per table depending on the place. It can also vary depending on the day and time of day, ie: weekday lunches less than weekend dinners. It seems to range from about 20 pesos to 50 pesos.

We found one place yesterday that seemed to have exceptionally good prices, but the pastas and fish had prices exclusive of the sauces, so a bit of study and math was required to figure out the actual cost.

Thank author of this post/comment"Under $200 Pesos is the goal"

When trying to find a place under $200 pesos, (about $10 bucks US) I found a couple of interesting options. One is to look where the Uruguayans eat on the smaller Avenidas. The pizza places are usually ok. For a bit over $100 pesos you can eat a filling lunch, but pizza every day is a bit much. There are bakeries all over town where you can by great savory pieces of pie. Ham & cheese, Spinach, Squash and egg, etc can cost under $110 pesos including a drink.

For the $200 peso range with a drink, there is Don Lemon's on BV Artigas near the corner of Maldonado. They are often quite busy, so the food is very fresh and its a nice little place.

Recently I found a great place on Jose Rodo just down the hill from Bv. Artigas called Rivero's. It is located inside the Centro de Hijos de Galicia building. It is actually a take out and delivery place with entertainment and dinner at night. They have a lot of events there. For lunch they have usually three specials of the day. I had Bandiola de Cerdo, a cut of pork cooked on the parrilla and sliced into four half to three quarter inch slices. The lunch included a green salad and a generous heap of sauteed veggies. Bread and Dessert were included for $110 pesos. It was really delicious. At other places in town it would cost three times that price.

Anyone else know of any good lunch places that are cheap?

Bik from Montreal

"the price of lunch"

I was in Mvd for the month of November, staying in el centro. On every street corner there seemed to be a little bistro or pizzeria. The pizzerias serve much more than just pizza, to be sure. I discovered in my outings, that there appears to be chains of them "la Pasiva" comes to mind which, I imagine would, by now, have broken into the Pocitos market. Anyway, all of that to say that it was easy to find a good lunch for around 150 pesos although the "table d'hôte" (whatever that is in Spanish?) was around 170 and included beverage.

A lot of the price perception is what one is used to and to me, those prices seemed astonishingly low.

Thank author of this post/comment"La Pasiva"

I don't find the food very appetizing at La Pasiva... maybe because I don't eat meat which narrows the selection considerable there... my feeling is they make up for quality in quantity.

170 for meal and beverage is not bad. Add coffee after wards and your up to probably 210. A dessert quite a bit more.

So the lunch Special at Fellini (effectively 208 pesos) is really quite a deal as it includes coffee or dessert and top notch food.

There is a Chinese Buffet on San Jose in Centro. I think that come to about 250 with a beverage and plenty of food... parrilla and buffet.

Stop comparing the price of food now with its price 5 years ago because it would only break your heart. Of course, most prices have already increased over the years.

The best thing to do is to focus on the present if you are searching for cheap food there in Pocitos.

Needless to say, cooking at home is way cheaper than dining in a restaurant so you might also want to look into it.
