EASY VEGAN URUGUAYAN RECIPES NEEDED

Looking for a "SPECIFICALLY URUGUAYAN" (WITH RESPECT TO, BUT NOT ARGENTINE NOR OTHER COUNTRIES) "EASY" "VEGAN" RECIPE (leaning toward dessert ideas, but open to appetizers, salads, drinks, etc. for local (Phoenix, AZ) world potluck), serving size 6-8 people (many people also bringing dishes), at the end of January 2011.

Please post any recipe ideas (with U.S. measurements/weights). All appreciated!

Looking to educate attendees about Uruguay in a fun, exciting, informative way (any background information appreciated as well)!

Thank you very, very much.

I think asking for Vegan recipes in Uruguay is like going to church and declaring that you are an atheist! There are lots of great fruits and vegetables available in Uruguay, but the main stay of the diet here is based on large portions of beef.

Many of the popular postres (desserts) here contain dairy produce and those which don't are often served with a dollop of dulce de leche (milk jam.)

A vegan friend of mine came over to stay for two weeks in 2007 when it rained a lot which deprived us of fresh vegetables. He said that he only survived the effects of malnutrition because I kept a large stock of imported Marmite :-)

I don't have any dessert recipie apart from a good frut salad.

As a main dish you can do a nice ''guiso de lentejas'' , I can post a recipe if you want.

Thanks for all of those information. I must say that personally I am more of a meat eater and I think I would enjoy it in Uruguay. What are some of the best meat recipes there is in Uruguay? I would love to get a taste of their best sellers in there. I love barbecue, are there any barbecue dishes in there as well? Thanks a lot and good day.

You can buy veggie meat, a meat substitute that is made of vegetables, and cook it in the same way that you cook your favorite dish. If you love barbecue, you can also make veggie meat barbecue. If you want stew or burger or sauteed meat, then you can do the same with your veggie meat. That way, you won't miss eating meat because of this great vegetable substitute for it.

The ROU grows a lot of soya and I'm familiar with TVP in Europe but I haven't seen it for sale here in the ROU. I'd worry that any shopkeeper who stocked it might be ripped to pieces by his angry carnivorous customers and neighbours :-)

You can buy soya stuff in Tienda Ingles... but I can't imagine eating any of it.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 2219117062
