Buffet 21, located at 21 de Setiembre 2745 in Pocitos, tel: 710-38-25 is one our favorite places to eat out.You shouldn't be surprised to learn its a buffet. All you can get. There is plenty of salad, cold veggies, hot (deep fried) veggies, chinese food, pasta and all you can eat meat cooked over a wood fire. Weekday lunch time it's 130 pesos ($5.50) per person plus drink (water is 35 pesos). On saturday it increases to 170 person. Not sure about nights. Whether you want a small lunch or a huge dinner the price is right. Trackbacks

I am sorry to report that Bufet 21 doesn't seem to be open for lunch on weekdays any more.

Thanks, for the recommendation. I love buffet restaurants because you have so many choices for everyone. I guess a lot of people will be unhappy that Buffet 21 is no longer serving lunch. It's hard to find a reasonable place to buy lunch.

One of the problems of being an American in Uruguay is getting used to the proper time to eat Dinner. We were invited to dinner at a friends house. At 10PM we went to the grocery store to buy stuff to make dinner!! Since 10PM seems to be able the start of dinner time, many restaurants don't open until 8 or 9PM.

What time do you typically go to bed if you're eating dinner at 10 or 11 PM? My husband and I don't eat dinner some nights until 9PM just because of our schedules. It struck me as funny that you listed Chinese food on the buffet items for a Uruguayan restaurant. Is the rest of the food Uruguayan?

I don't usually stay up late enough to have an answer for that and am used to dining in empty restaurants! They have a wood fired grill so you can get all the Uruguayan meat you can eat!

Okay this Buffet 21 sounds like a great place to go for traditional American/Canadian foods and it's a shame that it is no longer open for lunches. What other types of restaurants are open at lunchtime or do people have to take their lunches to work? Also, you stated "all the Uruguayan" meat you can eat. What is considered Uruguayan meat? Is is Lamb or Goat or Beef? I'm not sure what it would be down there. Perhaps you can enlighten us.

Beef and Chicken are very common... pork too and some lamb.. as well as goat cheese. All delicious and not very expensive.

How do they cook their meat in Uruguay? I know in some countries they have a tendency to boil a lot of the meat in order to take all the fat out and with that they seem to take all the flavour out as well.Do they commonly Bar-B-Que their meat, fry it or bake it in the oven? Is the style of cooking similar to middle eastern food or is it unique to Uruguay?

They commonly cook it over a wood fire even in many restaurants... sometimes they cook pizza that way too.

Thanks for the tip. That is a decent price for a buffet per person. I haven't been to many restuarants that cook on a wood fire.

Lee, have you been to Coco's? (think it's on Rivera??). I first went to Coco's and was amazed at the food. Just loved it. Loved it so much, I went to Buffet 21 thinking it was similar.... Not even close. If you do go, let me know how you think the 2 compare. Could be I just went on the wrong day....

Not yet. What's the address/cross street and I'll check it out. I think I saw Coco's on the bus the other day. Are they open for lunch?

Mi amiga that introduced us to the place is coming over later today. I'll ask her..While here, a little multi-tasking.. a few comments for posts above... Wood fires are found in restaurants with Parillas.. a giant grill with real wood fires.. covered in all kinds of meats and vegetables. Some serve lunch. Some only dinner. My wife says the best meat is found at the one at the corner of Tomas Diago and Juan Maria Perez. A few blocks from Lee's. I've seen it open for lunches... but I'm not sure what schedule it follows. As for dinnertime, after a year here, we've gone from 7pm to 10:30 mas or menos. Still not quite local yet, but close :-)

Yes that's the place I saw from the bus.Luis Alberto de Hererra is the street with Montevideo Shopping and Rivera is just up from the Mall (1 block away or so).
