Flan is popular in Mexican restaurants in the United States. It's a very tasty custard dish. Do you eat anything similar to flan in Uruguay?

Comment #1 Crystal Campbell (216.134.18.7) - 03/14/08 14:19

what do people eat in Uruguay,

Comment #2 Wilbur Corncob from Punta del Este - 03/15/08 06:20

Lots of beef... very tasty beef.

But don't let that fool you.. there are lots of great fruits and veggies too.

Comment #3 Dan (63.176.159.209) - 10/10/08 07:52

Oh man, what the heck is flan?

Comment #4 Lee from Pocitos - 10/11/08 04:35

I think flan was described in the original message... "a very tasty custard dish." And, yes, Flan is available here.

I've never had it so I can't say if it is the same as Flan in other places... maybe someone can has more Flan experience than I.

Comment #5 Victory (63.176.159.124) - 12/06/08 20:02

Flan, sounded like a fictional monster in a role playing game (RPG). Final Fantasy game series to be exact they look like jelly looking blogs usually their colors (and attributes) have yellow (lightning), red (fire), blue (ice). Maybe the "Spanish Flan" is the inspiration for that in-game creature.

Comment #6 Lee from Pocitos - 12/08/08 06:10

Ok... if you think flan is a big mystery check out this link for Wikipedia...

Flan is also called "caramel custard"... and for the lazy people... An imitation of crème caramel may be prepared from "instant flan powder".

I tried searching kroger.com and found nothing... pop flan into walmart's (ugh) search box and you (or I did) get 3 results...

Comment #7 Bettina (63.176.159.50) - 02/24/09 20:42

All those flan talks and links made my stomach grumbled and craved for some flan. I am a big fan of flans but I didn't know the history or what is the story behind flans. Thanks for the links.

Comment #8 Elaine (1) from Ireland - 03/13/09 10:31

oh yes, they certainly do flan here! (although I hate the stuff, its so damn jiggly!) Here they usually eat flan with dulce de leche (caramel). I just leave the flan and eat the the dulce de leche!

Introducing..... Leche Flan...

Ingredients:

12 egg yolks

2 cans condensed milk (14 oz.)

5 cans small evaporated milk

2 cups fine white sugar

2 tablespoon vanilla or

¼ teaspoon grated dayap rind (optional)

You will also need the following:

*

Llanera

*

Steamer

*

Strainer

How to make the Caramelized Syrup :

* In a stainless steel pan, dissolve 3/4 cups of sugar, add 1/4 cup water over medium heat, do not stir, just swirl the pan gently, caramelize in low heat if you don't want it burnt. Pale brown means sweeter and too dark means bitter. When you have achieved the desired color, pour the syrup in the llanera and make sure to coat all the parts of the pan.

How to make the Custard:

* In a mixing bowl, combine all the egg yolk, condensed milk, evaporated milk, sugar and vanilla. Use a whisk to mix thoroughly but gently to prevent bubbles from forming. Remove any solids by using a strainer.

* Pour the mixture in the llanera and cover it with an aluminum foil, so that the moisture from the steam won't come in the pan as it will become watery.

* Steam Cook for 40-45 minutes, or until knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

* Remove the llanera and let it cool at room temperature. Then refrigerate for several hours before serving.

* To unmold the leche flan- run a sharp knife around the edge and carefully invert it unto a platter or serving dish, let the caramelized sugar flow over the leche flan.

Uruguay is said to be about 85% agricultural so the common question would be why they even need any food in the first place. Beef is common in Uruguay but which part of the world has no vegeterians anyway? It has been said that star chefs there often place retaurants in remote locations. A case in point is Francis Mallman, a celebrity Argentinean chef who has restaurant in Garzon

Comment #11 Stella (63.176.159.65) - 09/03/09 21:26

I think every country have their own flan recipe. Flan is my ultimate favorite dessert. My husband used to bring me home made flan with sweetened yam, it is sooooooo delicious. I hope you could try that.

However, you could always make some by your self. Look for recipes in the net, there are lots. I liked my faln prepared with caramelized sugar on the top, its so sweet and i swear you will like it as well.

Comment #12 Rico (63.176.159.98) - 09/26/09 20:49

i also had tasted sweetened yam and i always wanted to have some more. So i have my wife learn the recipe, she is good in cooking fabulous desserts. Not just that, she always gives the cooking a twist.

She added some zest on the recipe and it tasted even more delicious, more delicious than that flan i tasted on an Asian restaurant.

Hope you guys could taste this flan my wife had prepared.

Here is one easy flan recipe

Easy Flan

Ingredients:

* 1 cup and 1/2 cup sugar

* 6 large eggs

* 1 14oz can sweetened condensed milk

* 2 13 oz cans evaporated milk

* 1 teaspoon vanilla

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. You will need 6 ramekins or other specialty flan cook ware and a large baking pan to put them in.

Pour 1 cup sugar in warm pan over medium heat. Constantly stir sugar until is browns and becomes caramel. Quickly pour approximately 2-3 tablespoons of caramel in each ramekin, tilting it to swirl the caramel around the sides. Reheat caramel if it starts to harden.

The whole recipe on the link below.

Easy Flan Recipe

Ingredients

* 1/2 cup Sugar

* 3 Eggs

* 1 can (14 oz) Condensed milk

* 1 can (12 oz) Evaporated milk

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350.

In a medium saucepan, melt the sugar over medium-high heat. Coat a round 1.5 quart pan with that caramel (if you use a metal pan, you can melt the sugar right there).

Beat the eggs and add the condensed milk and evaporated milk. Mix well.

Pour into the pan and place in another, shallow pan with water for a "bain-marie". Place in oven and bake in bain-marie at 350 for 1 hour, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.

Let cool and place in refrigerator until chilled and ready to serve.

To serve, cover mold with serving dish and turn over, taking care that caramel does not spill.

Mix other ingredient in order, stir well and pour in mold.

Place mold in pan with 2" hot water in preheated oven.

Bake at 350°F for 1 hour or until firm.

Let cool, then invert and unmold.

In have heard of flan before, but never to this extent. It seem interesting, to say the least.

Comment #17 Pinky (63.176.159.242) - 12/29/09 20:57

Hi there guys.

I love to ear flan, it is oh so sweet and yummy. I love how it melts in my mouth. And though those recipes are nice and seems to be easy to prepare, I will not dare to cook them, I am a good eater but not a good cook. But all in all, those recipes are great. Keep those posts coming.

Comment #18 Virgie (63.176.159.124) - 01/19/10 07:25

Hi Pinky, what was that? You love to ear flan?

Just like you I also love to eat flan. It is my ultimate favorite dessert. When I learned the recipe of this dish I instantly made them for my husband and guess what, he really liked it!

But I want to know a much better recipe that my family will love. Hope you can help me out. Thanks a lot.

Comment #19 Troy (63.176.159.56) - 02/11/10 19:32

I wish I could be able to make one of those nice recipe. I am sure my kids will love them too. Thanks a lot guys and I hope to see lots of posts coming in, also some good tips in making flan.

Comment #20 Lee from Pocitos - 02/12/10 05:50

"Too Sweet"

I couldn't imagine eating even one bite of flan... but it is a common dessert here and is often served with dulce de letche (carmel)... so if you want to be sickened with sweetness.. give that a try!
