vineyardHow do I best research opportunities to purchase vineyards in Uruguay?
Looking for an estancia with good land and a beautiful old house near Montevideo. It does not need to be large. under 50 hectares
Ruth: My suggestion would be for you to contact Alan Smink who runs the Reynolds Proprietades office in Punta del Este. I bought a house from him in Punta del Este and recommend him very highly. He speaks fluent English, is trustworthy, and acts as a buyer's agent for locating what you are interested in. Don't contact him unless you are seriously interested. We have been very happy with our purchase, and real estate prices in Uruguay are very low by US standards. Closing costs for the buyer are higher as a percentage of the purchase price than the US. A basic understanding of Spanish helps, and you must make sure you are dealing with people who will not take advantage of you because you are a gringo. Don't assume anything (for example, if someone says they will do something, don't automatically assume it will be done, or done in the same manner that you would do it). Make sure there is comelete understanding as to what is to be done, and try to pay after the work is done to your standard. This is basic stuff for any one buying property overseas. Good luck. Hope you find a nice vinyard. It should be 25% of the cost of one in France.
That is great information to have, Gilman. I'm sure everyone who reads it really appreciates it.The original poster asked about purchasing a vineyard. Are there a lot of vineyards in Uruguay?
Uruguay is known for its wine... at least in Uruguay. Not being a wine drinker I shouldn't say too much, but I understand that Uruguay produces exellent wine on par with Chile.
I love wine. Are there any that are sold here in the US? Can you name some brands? My husband and I like to stay away from the California wines, way too much sugar for our liking.
Great info! I didn't know that Uruguay had many vineyards. I am a wine fan as well and would love to know what brands there are.
What a great conversation. I learn something new every time I'm here. I need to start looking for wines from Uruguay. If you own your own vineyard, is it economically feasible to bottle your own wine?
"If you own your own vineyard, is it economically feasible to bottle your own wine?" Of course! That is if you have any clue about how to make wine. I don't think you can just step into a vineyard and start filling up the wine bottles without any experience or a lot of help from someone that has some!
Here is some available real estate in Uruguay. Take a look, see if you like any.
If anyone is looking for better quality wine from Uruguay, my suggestion is anything from the boutique winery, Bouza. They are just outside of Montevideo and make outstanding varietals of the top grape, Tannat, and outstanding blends of Tannat and Merlot or Tannat and Tempranillo. There are US distributors if you search the internet. Just my 2 cents. Anthony
Anthony do you happen to know if this winery ships to the United States?
I was wondering where the drift from vineyards to real estate was arising. Of course if you own a vineyard it would do you good if you bottled the wine yourself rather than have someone reap where you have sowed. If you do not have enough expertise, look for somewhere to learn the techniques of wine making. I am amazed that Uruguay is known for its wine(just like Vodka is synonymous to Russia).
I have been hearing a lot about Uruguayan wines recently! I'm not a big wine drinker but I've heard great things about their unique tannat wines and there are apparently some great bargains to be had for people looking for vineyards here.
if you're looking for chacras or estancias (ie country estates) then maybe you'll be interested in this link...it might give you an idea of prices
