Total Uruguay Expat eBook: Short term apartment rental in Montevideo
| Short term apartment rental in Montevideo for young family HiWe are a couple from the UK with two young children, and for some time now we have dreamt of visiting Uruguay. We are now in a position to visit Montevideo for 3 months from end of March 2010, and so are looking into accommodation options. We would like to stay in Pocitos or another family-friendly area. As we have two small children (they will be 6 months and 3yrs old respectively when we come) we really need an apartment with a kitchen in which we can prepare and eat food. We would also need a minimum of 2 bedrooms, but the second bedroom can be small. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice which could help us/point us in the right direction in trying to find a decent apartment in a nice/family friendly area. We obviously don't have much time (4 weeks to go) to get this sorted so any help you can give would really be appreciated. Also, any advice/experience of places to avoid, or the usual protocols to follow for deposits etc. for this type of short-term rental would be much appreciated. Many thanks in advance Chloe (& Dotun) |

Hi Chloe and co, Sounds like a bit of an adventure! March is a lovely time to be here, the weather is still warm but not overwhelming and if you choose to travel the beach towns aren't as crowded as in January and February For rentals check the link below, try out the mvdapartments website and also maybe contact Doug Heller at "Living in Montevideo", he knows of a few short term rentals as far as I know. Keep in mind that short term rentals (anything under 6 months) are not very common here, though there are a few options so don't worry. Another place you could check out is the "Bremen Apart Hotel", google that name and you'll get their website. I never got a replied when I tried them, but recently an expat family stayed there. As for areas...Punta Carretas and Parque Rodo are lovely, close to the rambla and plenty green areas and places to bring your kids. Keep it central and within walking distance to wherever you want to be because it can get exhausting hauling kids long distances (as I'm sure you know). I would avoid the are of el centro that goes north of 18 de Julio, and the parts of Ciudad Vieja that get far away from Plaza Independencia, its not comfortable at night. Best of luck with your search, let us know how you get along. Elaine :) |
| "Family friendly apartment near rambla"
I have a 1000 sq ft fully furnished family-friendly apartment with two bedrooms (children's bedroom has a wooden play house, a Fisher Price slide, and toys), fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, washer and dryer machines in unit, WiFi, etc.It is located in a good neighborhood just two blocks from the rambla (seaside boulevard) and 5 blocks South of 18 de Julio. If you're interested you can find photos and a link to my website, as well as my contact info in my profile in this forum. |

Marisa, I write because, eerily enough, the apartment you are renting is in the building where my family lived until 1947, when we moved to the U.S. (I was 4 years old at the time). We are considering spending the months of Jan and Feb, 2011 in Montevideo, and would be interested in renting the apartment for those two months, should we decide to do it. My only concerns are whether the neighborhood is safe and whether one needs air conditioning during those months. I'm not at all sure how this message will be transmitted to you or whether I'll manage to find your answer. Just in case, if you're willing, you can answer via my email: drshf@aol.com. Many thanks, Peter |

Peter, What an amazing coincidence! The neighborhood is safe, we've lived in the very same building for 16 years and never had any problem. As for air conditioning, there's never any need for it; the fresh breeze from the sea is usually more than enough. I don't want to hijack this thread, so I'm sending you an email with more information. |
| "Nice area, beautiful apartment!"
Wow it is a small world indeed! I can vouch for the area for anyone that is thinking of renting from Marisa as I live just one block up on Canelones and Julio Herrera y Obes.I have lived in a few different areas of the city centre (Ciudad Vieja, El Centro, Parque Rodo/Palermo, Pocitos) I find that where I am now is a family oriented and affordable area. It is not the most picture perfect part of town, but there is a great bi-weekly food market on Julio Herrera y Obes (Tuesday and Fridays) and it is a great spot to watch the sunset. Marisa the pictures of your place look great, it looks much more modern and clean than most apartments in the area. Have you recently refurbished? Is it your apartment and you're currently away or did you buy it rent it out? |
