| Good real estate agent experience Hi everyone. I just wanted to post here that I had a good experience with the real estate agent I used to buy our farm. She was able to find exactly what we wanted in the limited time we had there. I've worked with real estate agents here in the US that seemed to want to show you properties they wanted to sell. She wasn't like this at all. She was easy to work with, listened to what we wanted, and showed properties that were good matches. She also met us at our hotel in Montevideo. We ended up following her to properties in our rental car, but she and her husband were willing to drive us out to the properties. Communication might be an issue if you don't speak spanish. If you speak some spanish, it should be possible to communicate with a mixture of the two languages. She's very patient. But if you speak no spanish at all, you might want to hire a translator, someone like Ana Ines who has a site here on total uruguay. But it's not necessary. After we're there in January, you could also hire my daughter Penny to help with the spanish. Her name is Nancy. Here's her gmail account address: operaciones (remove this) inmobiliarias.17 (at) gmail (dot) com I don't have enough points to post the link to her website. If you send her an email, she can send you the website address. If the mods delete her email address from this post, contact me and I'll send you her contact information. brian |

| "Link to their website"
Here you go. The reason your like wasn't showing before was that they host their site on webs. That is in our spam grey list, ie: the link is accepted but not shown until it is reviewed (usually within a few hours).webs is a very bad place for a legitimate business to host a website, in my opinion, because it is chock full of cheap, earn money fast kind of websites and there are boat loats of people in India and Pakistan (among other places) posting tons of links in forums to useless websites there. Then I went and deleted your reply with it by mistake instead of approving it! Anyway, here's the link and thanks for sharing it. Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |
| "shady hosting providers"
Thanks for posting the link. I think they created the site themselves. I'm not sure. I'm a software developer so I was somewhat amused by their site. I figured once I get down there and find my computer(s) in the pile of boxes, I'd help with some improvements. Maybe it would help if they create a page here also. |
| "Websites..."
I find a larger portion of websites in Latin American are based on Flash and other ineffective or useless designs. Business people have told me "websites are ineffective and expensive".One company that sells propane gas setup an online ordering system. I registered an the first time I used it, it was quick and effective. Future times I got now gas. When I had someone call them to ask about it the response was something about having to telephone the order in. Also, when a friend tried to register in their system they had tremendous frustration, because you had to enter your street name and some cross street names. The problem was you needed to enter the full, not the common name, for example, everyone referred to "Benito Blanco", but the street is really "Juan Benito Blanco", though the Juan is rarely used. This website, required the full, official names. If you didn't get it right, you couldn't register. Meaning a lot of effort went into the website, but in the end they ignored ordered entered that way. So, yes, I would agree that websites are often "expensive and ineffective". | "website design"
Someone (can't remember who at the moment, sorry. it might have been you glen) sent me a link to a website with bus schedules. It was passable, but it required that the user be clairvoyant and know the number for the bus line in advance. You even had to type it in. As a programmer who often does asp.net web development, I can assure you this is an abomination. The corporate-speak for this is "low hanging fruit". There certainly seems to be a lot of that in uruguay. :-) Sounds like an opportunity assuming you can get people to spend the money on it. brian |
| "North American Perspective"
From a Norther American perspective, I absolutely agree. But I think you will find the business perspective in Uruguay is different and though it might be obvious, a simple sale, easy money (for the business), etc, that doesn't mean it will be seen that way. There are plenty of skilled web designers, but what we would find to be effective designs aren't the ones that seem popular with the businesses. Another issue is that I think with many things, "everyone knows", ie: everyone knows what bus goes somewhere, so what's the point of a website that tells you? Everyone knows that everything is closed on May 1st, so why would that need to be publicized anywhere? Explore the country (ie; the culture, etc) a while and then think about the opportunities from how you see things locally. Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |
| "business culture"
Yeah, there definitely seems to be a different perspective on what's a good investment or what has value. My older kids are thinking (long-term) about what kinds of businesses they might want to start. I made all kinds of suggestions of possibilities to them, but they'll have to wait until they've been there a couple years before they understand what's viable and what isn't. |
