Another "What is it?" question. What is a dormitorio de servicio? A service bedroom? Whatever it is, it sounds like it is separated from the main house and sometimes contains a bathroom, and is not included in the count of sleeping bedrooms.
Honest, I do go to the Spanish dictionary before I bother you, but I am drawing a blank on this one.

It is a small bedroom and often a bathroom off the kitchen. It would be designed for a live in maid. The bathroom is usually very minimal. Maybe a shower head and drain in the floor.
I saw one that was opened up into the kitchen to make a nice eat in kitchen.

If you're talking Pocitos, that's a trend that's well underway--converting the maid's quarters into an active part of the kitchen. You also find the laundry room, which is usually adjacent to the maid's room and also connected to the kitchen, moving in this direction.Modern owners are purchasing under/over dryer-washers or simply putting the washing machine inside a kitchen cupboard, a la Florida apartment style.
The reason for the maid's quarters off the kitchen/laundry room is the previous generation of Uruguayans had live in help. These poorly paid girls were kept in the kitchen/laundry area until the Mrs left for a few hours. At that time, the girl would clean and tidy up.
The younger generation does their own cleaning or has help come in 2-3-4 days a week. They've taken over the servicio and expanded the kitchens.

I can't imagine myself sleeping beside a washing machine. Those who has these must be heartless. Why don't they just make a room for their maids or if they don't want an extra room for maids then they mustn't hire stay-in or don't hire a maid at all.
