| Construction Supplies Does anyone know what kinds of insulation are most common in Uruguay? Are sheets of fibreglass or rockwool insulation readily available in Montevideo or Punta del Este? or what do they use? |

Down here in the sticks, rockwool and fibreglass in sheets or rolls are not available but I think I've seen rockwool cavity bats being installed near P de E.I have used contractors to spray "poliuretano" foam onto old concrete roofs before covering them with metal sandwich sheeting which incorporates a 100mm layer of dense yellow poliuretano. Such sheeting isn't cheap (about 50 U$S/sq meter) but its effective at keeping the place warm/cool and also much reduces the noise of heavy rain. For the new build extension I've used 50mm expanded polystyreme sheeting (espumaplas) as cavity wall bats and as roof insulation in the new cast concrete roofs. From what I've seen, you'll find a much larger selection of materials available around MVD and P de E... but be warned, most Uruguayan building contractors seem to view insulation as a silly waste of time so you've got to be FIRM about it :-) |

Thanks for the info Patrick. Yes I had heard that about insulation, right now I'm just scouting everything out but I'll be sure to practise my firm face if I decide to go ahead! |

Best of luck :-)There is one other form of natural roof insulation available (depending on local urban regulations) and that is pre-made rolls of thatch. I lost a granny to a thatch fire long ago so I avoid the stuff but it looks good in the right situation. The drawback are the numerous creepy crawlies which can live in it but I've seen situations where lightweight roofs of ordinary cheapo metal sheeting have been overlaid with the rolls of locally produced thatch which ensures water tightness and excludes the spiders etc. |
