I'm getting ready for a whirlwind tour of South America. Where are the places in Punta del Este that Americans hang out?

We have a place in Punta and so far i haven't discovered an American hangout. Punta is "in season" in January when lots of tourists, especially from Argentina and to a lesser extent, Brazil visit. The "happening" place for them is Jose Ignacio and La Barra. La Barra is hip, quaint, in a sort of So. California laid back way. Lots of art gallaries, small restaurants, better to walk because the main street is jammed in January. Jose Ignacio is more expensive, hip, the jet set is there but you have to know somebody. Probably a bigger American community in Monetvedeo. I love Uruguay. It is a jewel. I love Punta del Este and it is basically undiscovered by Americans, but well known to Argentines and Brazilians. Real estate is very inexpensive for the beauty of the area, and the first world amenities. Have fun. Uruguayans are great people, friendly and with both feet on the ground.

Welcome to Uruguay. When do you arrive?Since you posted under Punta del Este I assume you will be staying in that area? We have some get togethers in Montevideo.

We are looking for retirees in Punta Del Este. We would like to network with our retirees who are English speaking in that area. We are moving there soon.

This site has the nearest homes in the beach. They offer houses, apartments, cottages and mores. Hope this helps Mr. Troy Vincent

Peter:Thank you so much for your wonderful insight!!!!!! Actually I was looking for information related to government requirement for bringing dogs into the country, licensing issues, restriction on where dogs are and are not allowed, etc. I thought that there might be someone who has been through the process and could save me some agrivation.

Hi Terry, just go to any Uruguayan Consulate and ask about the requirements for bringing dogs and cats. This information given by the Consulates is correct and there is no big deal. You will need only just some vaccinations.
Regards,

Don't forget to talk to the airline you'll be flying to find out their requirements as well. If you will be changing flights in Argentina (or elsewhere) check with their consulates too. A friend had to give up his kids guinea pig in Argentina! It's not difficult... lots of people bring their dogs, though I've never done it personally.

Peter and Lee:Thank you again for your recommendations. I will follow your advise.
Do you know of any neighborhoods in Punta Del Este that I should stay away from? I will be visiting soon to look at properties (to purchase). I want to stay away from the city center, but want to be within walking distance to the beach.
Thanks in advance for your input.
