Salary wages for maids

Thank author of this post/commentSince last December, applies salary wages for the maids.

For 44hs a week, the minimum gross salary since December is: $uy 6591. (Net is about $uy 4614).

There is a new minimum salary, and a salary increase applies according to their November’s gross salary.

Please find attach the “convenio colectivo”. It also shows the increase that they will have in 2011 and 2012.

Does anyone know what the minimum wage PER HOUR is for maids as of January 1st, 2011?

"¡Ojo, Ana Inez! The Spanish text you cite does not mention"

a minimum wage for domestic workers. It simply gives a sliding scale series of increments pegged to past or present salary levels. Do you have a source for the minimum wage you quote?

Thank author of this post/comment"Minimum salary for maids: $uy 34.67 per hour gross"

Dan; minimum monthly salary I mention ($uy 6591) is calculate on 44hs per week, and as the government paper says the month has 4.32 weeks (6591/4.32/44=34.67 GORSS). This is the salary for Dec. 2010 on up to July 2011 where they will have other increase.

Ken; I have a pdf that I don´t know how to attach. I will be glad to share it with you and anyone that would like to have it. Please contact me at: anaines@expatuy.com

That is another issue that will confuse people! Email me the PDF and I'll see a way to post a link to it. Or, do you have a link to where ever you got the PDF?

Maids are even paid well, but I think it depends where they work for. In the world today, almost everything increases in price. So it is important to check do we really have to spend in a week or in a month.

I wonder how is the cost living in Uruguay this year. Is there an increase? How about when you get a maid at home, is it more expensive?

Hi Ana, thnx for all the info. I'm shocked that the mininum wage per hour is as low as UY$34. I really had no clue. I do have a cleaning lady in Uruguay and I pay her UY$80 per hour plus "viaticos". And I always tip her! I guess I am grossly overpaying. Not that I would ever lower her salary. I don't care. I love this woman. She is absolutely wonderful and she deserves every penny. Anyway, I was just trying to find out what other people are paying. I guess I don't have to increase her wages.

I think in theory you have to adjust the wages based on what you are currently paying. The wage increase is different from the minimum wage.

Someone said that what will happen is some people will fired their maids and then hire them back at the minimum wage.

I pay mine more than the minimum wage (and BPS). She told me something about a 20% increase. As it turned out the Dec 1, and July 1 increases will total a 20% increase.

Dan, you are not paying too much!

Although this is the minimum by law, lady´s that clean per hour ask to earn more per hour than the ones that works 9h/5d in the same house.

Your cleaning lady is not cheap, but is so difficult to find/have one that I hardly recommend you to keep it if you are happy with she!

If you will start looking again for a maid per hour, you are not going to pay less than $65 and you don´t have guarantee "to love" her.

The bus is always extra.

I am a very fortunate man in that the lovely Marisela comes for three hours every Wednesday to wash down the floors, clean the bathrooms and the windows. She has just finished secondary school so I'm worried about losing her.

Since arriving here I have employed 32 people on various tasks but when it comes to reliability, hard work, no smoking/texting/mate breaks and downright diligence, Marisela is in a class by herself. Last year I discovered that she is really a 5th generation Swiss citizen so maybe that explains it... the Swiss were always noted for their superhuman cleaning abilities. :-)

I pay her very well (85$ the hour/BPS/13th month etc) because she's worth every centesimo of it.

Thank author of this post/comment"Clean House"

What I like best is having a clean house and not having to worry about it. My maid comes 3 times a week, so of course I can only entertain guests those days... as the day following I've made a mess of things already!

I can't imagine why any expat moving here wouldn't hire a maid to come at least once a week.

Thank author of this post/comment"Minimun and real wage."

I don't know anyone that pays the minimun hourly wage, and I wonder if you can find any maid at all at that wage. I personally pay $70 an hour plus bus tickets for 4 hours once a week.

Thank author of this post/comment"minimum montlhy salary vs. minimum hourly wage"

So from what I gather, no one pays the minimum hourly wage to maids who are working only a few hours per week at any given place. And the officially-established minimum (monthly) salary is supposedly paid to maids who work at ONE given place, full time.

Correct?

If this is true, it stands to reason that maids would be encouraged NOT to have full time jobs anywhere so that they can make more money per hour. I mean, who wouldn't want to get paid uy$70 or uy$80 per hour opposite the officially established uy$34???

Thank author of this post/comment"Minimun salaries."

The minimum "oficial" salaries (hourly or monthly) for maids were fixed by the "Consejo de Salarios" (Salary Council) of the sector, as an agreement between the maids' union, the Government, and a leegue representing the employers. In the specific case of the maids, this type of agreements are thought to avoid abuse by the employers because of the individual one-on-one employment relationship. The worst paid of them, however, are the ones working for enterprises that give cleaning services. Anyway, no matter the the minimum "oficial" salaries, the Market has the last word. And it is very dificult to find a good maid (who does the job properly and who can be trusted), at the oficial salaries. Of course, hourly contracts are better payed than full-time contracts. Hourly paid maids generally work less hours and have to spend more time on buses. That's why they are payed more. Given equivalent salaries, I guess all of them would prefer to stay in just one place. Anyway, I think most families in Uruguay would not want, need or be able to pay for a full-time maid.
