The huge increase in the tax on ROU cigarettes coupled with the generous duty free importation allowance (800 cigarettes/person) has made the taking of a day trip on the Buquebus from Colonia to Buenos Aires a financially attractive proposition for smokers.I can now sail over on the early morning ferry, enjoy a good lunch accompanied by several large glasses of Guinness (which is unobtainable in the ROU, ) buy 800 cigarettes from Lopez Mena's duty free on the way home and still save 800 to 1000 pesos (depending on how much Guinness I drank) over the cost of buying the cigarettes here. Better still, Lopez Mena's Swiss or German Camel cigarettes are somewhat smoother than the local brands :-) |
