| Living expenses Dear All, Could anyone please give me a rough estimate for a single person expenses in Montevideo per month. I am talking about the average as I want to go to Uruguay for Spanish classes. So what I shall expect for rent, food, transportation, entertainment (not wild I am 38 yrs!!). Just a rough estimate please. I really appreciate it. Thanks Aiman |
| "Cost of living"
Helloooo, Can anyone advise on the above matter please. All opinions are appreciated. I am in touch with a Spanish school and they tell me that it cost about USD 250 per week for living expenses for a single person. I find this figure unrealistic. Any comments? |
| "It depends!"
What kind of housing? Short term? 1 yr rentals?Did you look at buscandocasa.com for ideas on rentals? Do you know for a 1 year rental you'll need a 5 month deposit, plus first months rent and one month real estate commission if you use an agent? Did you look on Tienda Inglesa's website for the current price of food? If you eat out once a day, each day, you are probably looking at at least US$100 a week just for that. There is no average. For one person, spending 350 pesos to go out for an evening (including taxi) is EXPENSIVE. For another US$100 would be nothing. Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |
| "Average estimate maybe!"
Hi Glen, Thanks for the reply. Actually, I wasn't talking about accommodation because I will pay for this separately. I was told USD 250 per week just for food shopping, transportation etc. I had a look at Tienda Inglesa. It is a good place for estimating shopping expenses. I am aware that there are differences among people in spending behaviour, but sometimes an average is available especially for single persons coming for short periods like 1-3 months. So if anyone can help me with shedding light on that average I would be thankful. |

Transportation: buses are 17 pesos. a taxi from Pocitos to Centro/Cuidad Vieja will be around 100 pesos. A remise probably more. Walking is free. A great way to have fun, exercise and save money is walk to or from Centro and take a bus in the other direction.A taxi ride from Pocitos to the airport is about 300 pesos. A taxi ride from the aiport to Pocitos is about US$45! The bus either way just over a buck. What are your transportation needs? 2 daily bus rides? Do you live close enough to a big grocery store to walk? Food Shopping: Grocery store: local products? Imported goods? In season fruits and veggies or imported? Restaurants? If your transportation will be 2 bus rides a day and food shopping to be local, in season produce and local brands, then $250 a week is probably more than sufficient. Hello Aiman: You can buy seasonal food, vegetables, fruits , cheeses , meat( like ham) and fish in the markets, this are normally cheaper than supermarkets. Every neighbourhood has one or two ‘’Ferias’’ per week. You find everything there. The web site of the IMM (Council) has all the details of the local markets (ferias) . When are you coming here? Have you got a place to stay? |

Thanks, Garciela. The school has its own accommodation arrangement for students, but to be honest I am thinking of arranging my own accommodation as I am sure it will be cheaper. This happened to me last year when I went to Malaga for three months where I booked my shared apart through the school, but when I got there I found out that i can get better quality accommodation for a lower price and to be with Spaniards to practise the language rather than international students. I am thinking of coming in Jan next year for 3 months or a bit less.So if you have rooms or you know of anyone who rents out rooms it would be great and appreciated. |
