Cost of maids in Montevideo
| Cost of maids in Montevideo Is anyone willing to share how much they pay for a part time maid? What about BPS or other taxes? |
| "Home help"
I heard that people pay their maids or childminders as little as 30-50 pesos an hour. It seems very low to me, but maybe they get extra benefits too.I was really surprised how many people have a maid in Montevideo when I was told so many times that Uruguay is a poor country. It seems in some neighborhoods almost everyone has hired help. |
| "Actual Experiences"
I think Jim was asking for people's actual experiences, not speculation about what someone heard someone might be paid by someone who never hired a maid!I pay my maid 62.5 pesos an hour, plus BPS, plus vacation and aguinaldo. Agunaldo equals a extra month of pay, the vacation pay equals almost 2 extra months of pay. I think those two extras come to about the equivalent of about 14 pesos an hour. BPS costs me about 1500 pesos a month for my maid and for that she gets full medical care, pension and other benefits, for example BPS pays her when she is sick and can't work. Now, how many maids in the USA get full medical coverage? |

More or less the same in my case. I pay her 70pesos/hour plus 2 bus tickets per day, and all the same benefits Lee mentions. 50-70 pesos seems to be the generally accepted range. The most hours per week, the less maids accept per hour. I pay in the high range cause it's just 4 hours once a week in my case, and I wanted a very trustable person (she cleans while nobody's at home and she keeps the keys). |

I've employed a lot of different people doing various jobs over the last few years but my best worker by far is young Marisela (a neighbour) who cleans my floors and windows every Wednesday morning. She works hard, doesn't pause for txt messages, doesn't take smoking breaks, doesn't steal things and doesn't gossip so I pay her the princely sum 70 pesos/hour plus the usual benefits. 70 pesos/hour is a very good wage down here but IMV she's worth it. |
| "A full time cleaning person"
According to the monthly reporting for the gastos comunes I pay at my apartment building, the person who cleans the common areas gets $5.401 (5 thousand pesos) a month salary. Plus the benefits.I don't know how many hours a day they work, but its 6 days a week. If that's 8 hour days... it comes to under 30 pesos an hour. |
