Living Expenses

Thank author of this post/commentHere is our example for living expenses (retired couple, also from Hawaii!): 1 bedroom furnished (incl washer & dryer) apartment in Ciudad Vieja for rent, gastos, utilites, A/C, internet, the works: per month: $1200. Groceries (shopping and street markets and supermarkets): $350-$400 per month (no red meat, just chicken fish, veggies, etc).

We eat out a few times per week, travel around a bit, got to museums, opera, movies, so that is all extra. No car, we just use buses and the occasional taxi.

Eating out: the portions are very large, so we usually get one main dish, one salad, and two drinks. At an average diner this costs about $15-$20. We had lunch last week at a fancy joint in Carrasco, cost us $50. With beer. Very good food, too.

We are only here for 6 months so didn't get health insurance, we are covered by our US insurance (Blue Cross).

Based on our experience, I would say that you would need at least $2000 monthly to live comfortably in Montevideo.

As I suggested to someone else on these forums (who took the idea amiss, thought I was joking, I wasn't), consider Paraguay. Much less expensive than Uruguay, more multicultural, great food, more 3rd-world, but still very nice. Much hotter in the summer, though. If you are retired, you could probably find more local volunteer opportunities than in Uruguay. Visit this website for another take: movingoverseasbookdotcom and go to the "Why I live in Paraguay instead of Uruguay" section. I would think you could live in Paraguay for $1000 per month for rent and food. Last time I looked, furnished apts were going for $400-$500 per month. And up, of course.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 2410201497
