| "2 bdrm apartment in Pocitos or Ciudad Vieja"
I've come to Montevideo, now, three times; the fall of 2010, the winter of 2011 and now again this year. It seems the rents this year took a bit of a leap upwards. My first visit, I had a 2 bdrm apartment just outside la ciudad vieja, in el centro and it cost 678 US$ per month - I had incidentals to cover like light and phone. Last year, for a 1 bdrm in north Pocitos, I paid 850 US$ and I negotiated that the lights and cable - there was no phone - be included. This year, I'm a little further north, near the park and it's 900 US$ and I'll have incidentals to pay when I leave - there is neither phone nor tv. Apart from the first year, these rental prices seem high considering what is the average Uruguayan wage. |

Maybe. If you are single, rent (long-term) an unfurnished apartment, maintain a fairly sedate lifestyle, then I think you can do it. For now, anyway. As mentioned above, inflation rears its ugly head. 3 examples I just found in the last week:1) The afternoon tea at the Balmoral Hotel went up from $150 to $175. 2) A roast chicken (at Calpryca) went up from $135 to $145 3) A falafel sandwich at the Shawarma place off San Jose went from $100 to $120. All in the last couple of weeks. So your $1750 should have a cushion for inflation. And bring a lump sum to furnish that apartment, too. |
