| The Politics of Taxes in Uruguay Here is the place to let it out. Another post was getting side tracked with Alberto and Patrick's interesting discussion (debate?) on the politics of taxes in Uruguay.Let it continue here... remember, this is about taxes in URUGUAY. | "Hummm..."
Don't know Patrick, but for me there's no fun in discussing about taxes in a thread specially dedicated to the subject. hahaha. Sorry again, Glen. |

I reckoned the best policy was to wait for Lorenzo to provoke me :-)Maybe the forthcoming decree to set out the precise details of how, where, how much when and how they plan to view foreign personal tax allowances wrt whether such income should be taxed here... and the many other nasty surprises likely to be found in new taxes. |
| "I know!"
It's people don't like being told what to do! The trick is to gentle keep conversations on topic. Of course now I am getting this one off topic!Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |

I have faith in Lorenzo. We know what he wanted to do initially and we know how the negotiations and debates in the legislature watered down his initial proposals. I'm confident that he'll use the decree to try to sneak some of his more radical intentions back into the equation :-) |
| "Lorenzo is sweeter than dulce de leche."
Patrick, You have to admit that Lorenzo cannot compete with his colegues of the G7 or the Gwhatever. They have to pay for their huge deficits and they will go for their money whenever it's hidden. So you better learn Spanish and drink mate fast so you are not detected as a rebel runing away with Her Magesty's money. Don't claim about Lorenzo. He'll be smoother and slower and more tolerant than them. Uruguay will be one of the last places in the world for taxing dictatorship to arrive, and the republic of Colonia Valdense will probably get there a couple of years later than Uruguay. Anyway, later don't mean never. |
Comment #601/10/11 19:13Rural east Colonia departmento | "The bankrupt north"
I have to agree... Lorenzo and the DGI are cat compared to the desperate cash strapped robber barons who rule oop north. My own country (Ireland) is technically bankrupt so lacks the funds or the ability to seek out the 26 million citizens who don't live there. I have no Irish assets or investments and Ireland lacks an embassy here so I'm well off their radar.Last year has seen extra taxes imposed by the British on the rental profits I get from my UK rented houses and worse still, they have decided to tax my UK old age pension in the American style in spite of me being a foreigner and not living there any more. The only cheering aspect is that the British allow reasonable travelling expenses for landlords who visit their rented houses/tenants to check that all is well. So long as I include a visit to my houses when I go to Europe, the travel expenses are deductible against rental profits. Considering my advancing years, I feel justified flying business class, renting a comfy car, eating well and staying in nice hotels when I get there because Queen Betty's government will be paying half the bill. :-) While I can live with Lorenzo's 12% on untaxed income, now that he seems keen on repeating the errors of the northern robber barons himself with a borrow and spend approach to life, I fear that he'll get a whole lot nastier when our current boom hits the buffers... but only time will tell. |
