Pepe Mujica and You?
| Pepe Mujica and You? How will the election of Pepe Mujica for the next President of Uruguay affect your decision to move to or stay in Uruguay? |
| "Pepe for President"
I am very interested to see how he is when he actually takes office, but I think many of the skeptics have been pleasantly surprised by his behaviour since winning in November. His acceptance speech was calm, logical and respectable, he at least *appeared* to be concerned about fairly assigning cabinet positions, and he has pledged to continue on the same economic path as Frente Amplio have done for the past 5 years. From the fear and worry that preceded the elections I think many people are feeling surprisingly calm now that he's actually in office...we'll see |

I intend to stay where I am unless or until I'm driven out by force :-) I find the man to be strangely endearing... but a personal liking for a politician doesn't count for doodly aquat when it comes to policy and legislation. I expected the northern markets to take a dim view of him resulting in a fall in the value of the peso but for reasons I cannot fathom, the reverse has happened. I've been embraced by Pepe (twice.) Whether this was a sign of friendship or whether he was feeling for exactly the right place to insert the dagger at a later date remains to be seen :-) |
| "you already know it"
Hi all, Well, let's think it this way. In Uruguay, and you already know this, everything goes slowly, everything needs consensus, discussion, long discussion, more consensus, and then discussing the consensus. So, I do not expect any dramatic change from this or any other government. Actually, I think I just found another advantage of living in Uruguay, extra life. If the world is meant to end in 2012, it will end in 2021 in Uruguay. |

My wife and I are considering retiring to Uruguay in about 2 - 3 years now that Australia is out financially and we are somewhat aprehensive about South American politics. Our aprehensions seem unfair with respect to Uruguay however as all the comments I have read from this site over the last three months have calmed our fears. We hope the new president does nothing to raise them. |

Apart from our physical location, there's not much which is "typically South American" about the ROU. Where I live resembles Hampshire of long ago with a few added palm trees. The local population reflects the lifestyle and values of Switzerland or Alpine Italy circe 1965. National polics are more in line with Harold Wilson socialism than with the madder end of the spectrum and here in more blanco (conservative) parts, they approximate to Harold Macmillan toryism. Little old Indio ladies in bowler hats and armed mustachioed bandits are quite unknown :-) |
