| Homeless I have a question which ''haunts'' me in my head regarding all the homeless people in the street which I see every day. Usually, I see them sleeping in parks, behind walls or under cardboard or plastic protective canvas but with the actual cold temperature and especially icy nights which we have at the moment, what's happening to them? Do they always sleep outside or the city of Montevideo has shelters for these persons? Are there charities which take care of these people by looking of the food or which comes to comfort them by giving warm meals? It is maybe a stupid question which I ask but I saw two or three times families with children living as it in the street. JF |
Comment #107/02/11 13:15Rural east Colonia departmento | "Homelessness"
I currently have a gaucho camping at the bottom of my land near the arroyo. Its usual for local rural landowners to offer camping to itinerant gauchos in this area during the winter time as well as allowing them a reasonable amount of firewood gathering privileges. As for the urban homeless, I really don't know. Those with a Certificate of Destitution and a family can often get some sort of free state housing (usually a very basic 2 roomed bungalow) but I have no idea about the provision of hostels for single people. |
| "Homeless in Montevideo"
There are several places where the homeless can go to sleep. The problem is that these people often do not go to these places because they must follow certain rules in the shelters, such as bathing, follow rules of conduct so they prefer to stay in the street with his freedom. There are also groups of people who prepare hot meals and at night they go out to give to the homeless and make more bearable the harsh winter. The government is considering to put in psychiatric hospitals to many of the homeless since most people living on the street in Montevideo have mental illness. At the moment there are 550 people living on the streets. Lets hope this number decreases quickly! |
| "Psychiatric hospitals"
Let say that it is a radical approach by a government to solve the problem of the poverty by putting most of them in a psychiatric hospital. I agree that some are a little bit bizarre or a little bit disturbed but it seems to me that it is far from being the case of all.I am surprised as well as they know exactly the number of homeless. It is the first time when I see an exact figure while generally city officials or government always speak about ''estimate''. I would always be surprised by these Uruguayan state employees. :) |
