Feminists and the Left

Thank author of this post/commentThis is a very interesting article on Women in Politics in Latin America. As you can see by the title of the article it discusses the Dangerous Liaisons of Latin American Feminists and the Left.

By the Left it is discussing leftist politics and apparently it has always had a complex relationship with women's struggles which many times translates in to political exploitation and neutralization.

If this topic interests you it will be a very interesting article for you to read and will help you understand why women are depressed when it comes to asserting themselves in politics.

Thank author of this post/commentActually that was a very interesting article to read. You never think that countries other than the Muslim based countries would be negative towards women but I guess it just goes to show you that it can happen anywhere.

I hope for the women's sakes that they get a coalition going to stamp this idea out. Women of the world have just as much right to do the things they want as the men of the world do.

It's about time that men realized this because if the women ever decide they have had enough the men in most cases will be completely at a loss on how to cope.

Women should never forget that they are just as, or even in some cases more important than men, so to speak. Simply for the fact that they are supposed to know how to nurture the young, by nature.

Thank author of this post/comment"Women in South America"

There has been a few comments on domestic violence and the treatment of certain groups of society on the board lately. Although there are still many issues of women not reaching past a certain level in their careers and issues regarding domestic violence in South America, there is also a paradoxical respect for women that is absent in Europe or the US.

There is a respect, even reverence for mothers and grandmothers that has long been forgotten elsewhere, and the fanfare of International Women's Day is amazing. I was simply walking around Buenos Aires on International Womens Days this year (March 8th) and I was given a red rose, a small box of chocolates and a small book about famous women of the past 2 centuries!

Thank author of this post/comment""paradoxical respect""

Elaine,

Your observations are so on target, as far as I'm concerned. I've witnessed the respect and reverence that South American women are afforded, especially in public. And this is good thing! Indeed, women have come a long way in these parts of the world!

In Uruguay, despite grievances about gender discrimination at the work place (mostly wage-related) and domestic violence complaints that pop up here and there in the media and elsewhere, women have made tremendous progress in many areas. Just to give one example, women have been actively involved in government and have held important leadership positions for years now. This is a great achievement.

But have any of you read the article that rowena105 recomends? Where's the link to it?
