Questions: Indian restaurant/grocery/spices in Uruguay?
| Questions: Indian restaurant/grocery/spices in Uruguay? My husband and I are very fond of Indian food (as in India) and would like to find either a restaurant or grocery with Indian food/spices. We'll be living out by Piriápolis but have friends all over Uruguay (from Colonia to Punta del Este) and would be willing to go as far as Buenos Aires for the right meal. |

I guess most of the spices can be found in Singer. I've also seen a limitted variety of chutneys in Tienda Inglesa (including a local butiá-chutney). However, I don't know of any true Indian restorant in Uruguay, and if you find one, please tell me!!! |

One of the few things I miss here is Far Eastern cookery. I do my best with curries but I still crave quality Indian and Thai/Lao cooking. I've tried a couple of alleged Far Eastern restaurants in Buenos Aires but they were both expensive and disappointing. A couple of years ago I wangled my way into the staff canteen at Tata (the Indian software people) in the hopes of satisfying my cravings but the food on offer was not Indian :-( So I too would like to hear if anyone finds a good Indian or Thai/Lao restaurant so I can beat a path to its door :-) |

Only you could do this Patrick! I have many Indian friends living here in Montevideo who work for Tata and they couldn't get their hands on any of the ingredients to make good Indian grub. I think you might be able to get the raw ingredients in Buenos Aires, but still no great restaurants to speak of. |

People...sorry but is not one Indian Restaurante in Montevideo..probably no one wants invest and take the risk to open it, because its a very strong flavour for uruguayan people and could be very expensive to find the rigth spices :( |

I have a number of Indian and Chinese cousins and I've been hustling both lots of families to come over and open restaurants without success. I ran a potato and tamarind processing and packing biz in Thailand for nearly 40 years and have been trying to persuade friends and former colleagues to send some dutiful offspring over for restaurant duties but again without success. A couple of years ago I blagged my way into Tata (the Indian software people) to try out their canteen but there wasn't the smallest sign of Indian food. I've hustled managers at the Indian Outlet stores and even cornered the Pakistani consul in an elevator when visiting my broker but sad to say, nobody could point me in the direction of a good eastern restaurant. Needs must when the devil drives and self-reliance is character forming so I'm about to sit down to a lunch of cooked-it-myself curried beef :-) |

Bringing a selection of ingredients with you from the UK is an excellent plan. Each time I or my SO visit England, my cousin Rutna provides a 5 kilo parcel of spices and pastes for us to bring home on our return. I'm told that Birmingham (UK) is now the world's leading exporter of prepared Indian cooking ingredients. You can buy various Sharwoods products here in the ROU now including a limited selection of curry powders, pastes and assorted flavours of mango chutney bit they aren't cheap. I have a few Uruguayo friends who enjoy mild curries but the dishes which are really popular with everybody are more along the lines of traditional English fare. Roast beef goes down a treat as does thick beef gravy (which I've relearned how to make from first principles because instant granules are not available) though Yorkshire puddings only appeal to some. Steak and kidney puddings are popular too... but I reckon its the gravy. :-) Various English puddings like apple crumble, trifle and spotted dick (all with Birds custard) are mega popular. I reckon a few tonnes of Bird's custard powder would sell very well down here. |

Although Coconut Milk is quite pricey here, they do have dried unsweetened coconut which is easy to make the milk from. Shame they don't have a good source of fresh coconuts. At least I haven't been able to find them. Anyone know a source? |

Hi Every One !! I am a new member to this site, and came upon it by accident.(I have a google alert for Uruguay) I am an excellent Indian cook(not by profession but by hobby) I am planning to leave Canada and settle in South America next year. Importing spices is NOT a problem as I have excellent contacts here in Calgary where we get every indian spice and ready made sauce you can imagine. Calgary is full of Indian Restaurants and stores.(Sizable East Indian population in Calgary) My Question is : Is it viable to open an Indian Restaurant in Montevideo? Any advice or suggetions, gracefully considered. Thanks IKE |

Sorry Ike, uruguayans are very reticents to new flavors, we use at the most salt and pepper, when I cook with cumin or curry friends make "faces" but you can try opening a restaurant in Punta del Este wich is an international resort (and very expensive).Will be a new experience worth to try and also I will be able to enjoy some good Indian foor !!!! |

You are right.A small non-spicy example... I am currently growing a crop of soya and many of my neighbours are doing the same. We grow lots of soya here. Last month I threw an asado and because I'm very partial to stir fried soya bean sprouts and kept a sack of beans from last year's crop, I provided a large side dish of stir-fried bean sprouts c/w soy sauce. NOBODY would even try it. The general view was that we grow soya for the sole purpose of exporting it to foreigners. :-) |

It is so funny, I lived in Los Angeles, USA for 30 years and got used to spicy food, only two years ago I was able to get some Habanero or Cayenne peppers in a nursery that caters to very exclusive chefs in P del Este.Another experience was when I introduced to my friends "guacamole" they couldn't believe the color.!!!! |

Hey... it looks like there's some desire in Uruguay for a good Indian restaurant. I am an American, married to an Indian who is a trained Indian and Continental chef who formerly worked high end hotels in Mumbai. We are looking into moving to Uruguay, preferably in the Colonia area. My parents are going to retire there. We would like to open a small Indian restaurant ( he cooks, I do front of house) and are looking into what's available in terms of facilities - whether we need to buy or can rent, if there is existing restaurant space, and what kind of investment would be required. As we move along, we may also be seeking some partners/ investors to see if we can make it happen! My husband Saji is probably the best cook I've ever met, as my waistline will verify!If anyone knows anything to help, please let me know!!!
