You are right.

A small non-spicy example...

I am currently growing a crop of soya and many of my neighbours are doing the same. We grow lots of soya here. Last month I threw an asado and because I'm very partial to stir fried soya bean sprouts and kept a sack of beans from last year's crop, I provided a large side dish of stir-fried bean sprouts c/w soy sauce.

NOBODY would even try it. The general view was that we grow soya for the sole purpose of exporting it to foreigners. :-)
