Uruguay on Press Freedom Watch List

"Uruguay has been included on a list of countries where criticism of the government is not welcome, according to the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA)." Of course, no government welcomes criticism but the implication in this article is that the UY government actually suppresses the media. Do those of you living in UY deem this to be the case?

Thank author of this post/commentI'm not sure about how free the press is, but the government has its issues. (Check the link above for commentary.)

The people and the life style here are pretty good. But like many places in the world, the government leaves a lot to be desired.

Thanks for the link to your article Steve. I personally would find it easier to tolerate a socialist state as opposed to a police state. I will have to disagree with you on the direction of the US though. I really don't believe the US is moving towards socialism but rather continuing on its path of corpo-fascism wrapped in new packaging.

Thank author of this post/commentEric-

I feel fascist or socialist is mostly semantics at a practical level. A police state is a police state and the difference between a right wing and a left wing structure matters little.

Like an old Pole who had lived under the Nazi and communist regime said when asked about the difference between the two, "The bullet to the head comes from the west or it comes from the east."

The real issue is US is on a Totalitarian path with a unique blend of socialism and fascism. But this is about UY, so enough said about N. America.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 43917253
