Thank you Patrick. I live by the great lakes.........brown water is what I want to run away from! lol!! I am originally from an island in the med so the ocean is what I am looking for. Thank you for the info.
For pure ocean, you'll need to look from Punta del Este eastwards towards the Brazilian border. Its sometimes a rougher sea than the Med but its a lot cleaner :-)
I used to live by the sea on the rocky coast of south west Ireland but I've ended up 250kms away from it in rural Colonia... though we do have nice sandy river beaches nearby.
In Pocitos the water is sometimes a nice color, sometimes brownish. It has waves and a tide like a ocean. It is also a bit salty.
An important point to remember is that the climate in Uruguay is not tropical. Hot summers and coldish winters (not below freezing). The season for swimming in the river or ocean is fairly short.
