Possible Free Trade Agreement With US

Thank author of this post/commentI've heard rumblings of a possible free-trade agreement between Uruguay and the US, could it be true?!

Apparently following a meeting between Christopher McMullen (of the US's hilariously named "Office of Western Hemisphere Affairs) and Uruguay's foreign minister Gonzalo Fernández they discussed possible improvements on the TIFA (Trade and Investment Framework Agreements).

Could this possibly mean the end of ridiculously high import taxes? We shall see....

No.

The taxes are to protect non-existent industries...they have nothing to do with US trade or lack of it.

Thank author of this post/commentI was under the impression that the ridiculous import taxes (what are they...about 60%?) are left over from when Uruguay had no income tax (prior to 2007) and so they generated revenue via sales and import taxes....

But now they have income tax and they still have these insane import taxes which inflate the prices of pretty much all produced goods! We can't exactly argue they are to protect Uruguayan industries when they make very little in this country!

Ahhh, another Uruguayan mystery!

Thank author of this post/commentI think the real question is whether such a "free trade" agreement would actually lower the import taxes in a way that would benefit the average person. Or, would they just be a corporate maneuver that satisfies some political and corporate gamers and nobody else.

Could you actually receive a package from the USA at the Post Office without paying a 60% import tax? Could you receive one from DHL/UPS without paying the tax and a customs broker?

I have an idea it is much more for politics than reality.

Thank author of this post/commentThe current gov has been spending money like its going out of style so any extra income raised from the personal income tax has been spent several times over. They even provide a well-off immigrant like me with free healthcare :-)

One day the ROU might get itself a gov which cuts taxes, gives a few hundred thousand funcionarios proper jobs and ceases to persecute business but I doubt if I'll see such a thing in my lifetime.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 2771476159
