candombe on a Saturday?
| candombe on a Saturday? I've heard Sunday nights are the best to see candombe groups, but I have friends coming to visit this weekend who want to see candombe but leave on Sunday. Does anyone know if there's anyplace to see it on Fridays or Saturdays? Thanks! |

Emma, La Gozadera is the group in my neighbourhood (Malvín), I think they also play on Sundays, but may be they have activities on Saturday too, cause they have a small facility where they practice. Go to www.lagozadera.org.uy and look in Contacto. You'll find their address and a couple of phone numbers where you may find out what's on on saturday. Another group I like a lot is the all-women group of La Melaza (lamelaza.com, no www, no uy). But unfortunately they don't have a contact phone, just a message board. |

If you don't find Candombe, check in El Observador today (www.observa.com.uy) under "Europa Festeja su día en la Ciudad Vieja". There's outdoor activities there that will add some action to the traditional Sarandi Streat scene, this Saturday. After wondering arround, you may then get them for a parrillada in Mercado del Puerto. Also traditional, but effective. By the way, don't forget to visit the Museo del Carnaval, West from the Mercado del Puerto, in the same block. It's worth seeing. |

Hi EmmaIf you get a chance to go to the Museum, ask them about where and when the candombe groups are. We went there and they gave us a map and indicated times and places. We checked out Barrio Sur on a Saturday afternoon, which was awesome - highly recommended! |
