What is the El Centro area like? Safe? read on Intl Living site that property is cheaper there than more upscale older areas of the city. Can you get a decent 1200 sq. ft. condo for $70K like they say? what about fixer uppers?

Try looking on Buscando Casa...

Click Ventas.

Select Montevideo in Lugar

Select Casa in Inmueble

Click Buscar

On the left there will be a menu of the Barrios and the number of properties for sale (on that site) in each.

If you select apartamentos rather than Casa there will be a much bigger selection.

What out for the financed property. They are often listed by the downpayment and never tell you the actual asking price. To convert sq mtrs to sq ft the "easy" way... multiple by 10. That gets you in the ball park.

I think International Living is hyping cheapness too much.

Did you read my comment #1? Use that link.. it is probably your best starting point. The go for the newspaper and ads you see on buildings.

All information concerning Uruguay can always be considered as top quality information, as the country is very much a top quality one.

"buying in mvd"

All information concerning Uruguay can always be considered as top quality information, as the country is very much a top quality one.

WHAT ?

Nothing is absolute.

If someone is considering buying here or moving here lot, stock and barrel I highly suggest that you come and rent first whether it be this country or any other. And do so in various seasons of the year as cities such as Montevideo change quite a bit from winter to summer.

One person's postives can be another's negatives and vic versa. No one place is great for everyone.

Living in Argentina for the last few years I sometimes have to laugh at people's complaints about certain things. Had I come directly from the USA I might be annoyed by the same things. Perspective, orientation.

Come and RENT.

I live in El Centro. I would not buy here. It is great for catching buses during the day but loud and dirty and polluted. My portero walks with me late to go to a store. My friends bought in Cuidad Vieja but not for 70k - try 85 with lots of renovations needed. The area is not yet in urban gentrification as touted.

Prices often come with something not stated - the extra monthly payment and amoutn of years to add on.

Keep researching !!!!!!!!!!!

""Financing""

"Prices often come with something not stated - the extra monthly payment and amount of years to add on."

Yeah... property will be listed like "$50, 000 with financing." That probably means your down payment is $50, 000 and the actual price could be anything.

"Where to buy in Montevideo"

"What is the El Centro area like? Safe? read on Intl Living site that property is cheaper there than more upscale older areas of the city."

I would HIGHLY advise ignorning EVERYTHING on International Living. They are widely regarded as outright liars in these parts. They hype up all the advantages and completely ignore any negatives or risks - this is not the reality you will arrive to, not the reality you will buy in and so is not what you should be expecting!

As Patt so wisely said, all areas are good for different reasons. Some are great hubs, easy to catch buses, easy to find late night pharmacies, there are little markets on every corner etc (eg. Centro) and some areas are incredibly beautiful with private houses, wonderful trees and wonderfully silent (such as Punta Carretas) but the prices are high and services are that little bit further away.

It depends on SO many factors. Are you looking to buy to rent, buy to live, buy to rent, are you young/old, are you looking to be close to the action or far away from it, do you need bus routes or will you have a car etc etc.

The security in Ciudad Vieja is still an issue, anyone who completely omits this is tricking you. There is a problem with drugs and security, the area empties out in the evenings when all the 9-5 workers go home, the same at the weekends when everything away from Sarandi and the Mercado is like a ghost town. You can't know these things yourself until you come and visit and develop your own opinions.

""Where to buy in Montevideo""

Thank you Elaine for stating some big truths. I have been on vacation and offline.

Listen - I live in El Centro. It is a red zone - not safe. I have had people here visiting from Buenos Aires and at night to find kiosco the portero walks with them so they are safer. Men and women.

Yes - this says a few things -the area is not safe at night AND the people of Uruguay are incredibly caring and nice. (in general - there are no absolutes.)

Cuidad Vieja is not at all safe. Period. No one can change my mind about that. The hair goes up on the back of my neck at night. I have seen robberies (mid afternoon) and have had the house I was staying in robbed during the day. Maybe you can find a deal and renovate (at a hassle and expense and not from a distance) and wait for a possible gentrification. For a true change in that area I think you will be waiting a long time (just my personal opinion).

Come on over, down to MVD and spend some time. Rent in CV or El Centro. It is a completely different experience living day to day here than living in upscale Pocitos or just visiting or working on a real estate project. On 18 de Julio yesterday there were beggars on every block from Plaza Independencia to the University, plus homeless men and children sleeping on the street. I am not exaggerating.

There are a lot of opportunists out there selling people on Uruguay (or Costa Rica, Panama, Argentina) for their own personal gain so beware of any and all information that sounds too good to be true.

Suerte

"Where To Buy in Montevideo"

Hi Elaine,

I fully endorse your comments about "Living Abroad". A lot of what they put out appears to comprise shameless propaganda (linked to their never to be repeated offers !!!!).

Pocitos is our preferred area & we are hoping eventually to buy a modern apartment for $200, 000 - $300, 000 US !

Cheers,

Barry
