| Winter Weather in Montevideo Hello All - Happy New Year! Question, I plan on arriving in URG around early June and might hang around for a month or two. Can you please tell me how the winters are like in Montevideo? How have the last few winters been? Thank you all so much!!! |
| "Winter"
Since you are from Chicago, you will probably think it is shirt-sleeve winter.I;'m from Hawaii, so I thought it was too d__n cold!Seriously, go to weather dot com and look at the annual chart for Montevideo, you will see it gets close to freezing but no snow. |
| "Cold wet and windy"
Humidity is almost always high, greater than 80% so things won't dry out. Frequent rainy days even though it quite often doesn't rain much. Very common for the temperature to not get above about 13C or 14C and sometimes days when it does not get above about 8C. Add to that a breeze or often enough a stronger wind to emphasise the chill. You have to look closely at statistics to get that sort of info from them. Personally I go through winter and rarely put on a jacket but most locals rug up when outside so you can't see much besides their faces. Very pleasant on the days when the wind stops and the sun is shining. Come and enjoy it but bring a jacket just in case. Expert Page: House Sitters for Uruguay |

"Cold" is what you think is "cold". If you come from Marquette, MI or Canada, you will probably think Uruguay's winter will be really mild to you. If you come from Florida or Southern California, you may think differently. But, if you look at the locals, they do dress warmly on certain winter days, when the temperature drops close to or below zero. They wear coats, jackets, sweaters, scarves and hats. |
| "indoors vs. outdoors"
I was referring to what if feels like outdoors. Indoors, if you have central heating or a wood burner, it's obviously much better than if you use space heaters, because with central heating your whole house or apt will most likely be dry and warm opposite cool or cold and humid, depending on what type of device you use and which area of your house or apt you decide to use it in. |

I´m from Chicago, too, and I find the winters here cold, especially the last few years. I think part of it is age related. I layer, like I did in Chicago, back in my cross country skiing days. Light but very warm silk "longjohns" under knit pants. When it´s colder, I switch to corduroy. I usually wear short sleeve T-shirts with a cardigan or regular sweater or sweat shirt over all. My hair is short, so I pull a nice knit hat down on my head, even in the house if I need to! 90 per cent of your body heat is lost through the top of your head. It IS cold here, and humid, which makes it feel colder than the temperature, and windy on top of everything, but it is NEVER the type of cold that takes your breath away like it does in Chicago in February!
