Where to stay in Montevideo

Thank author of this post/commentHello,

I'm an American coming to Montevideo to take a look at properties and consider moving there under their residency program. I'd like to stay for a week or so around the 3rd week of May. I have stayed in hotels all over the world, and what that taught me is that a hotel will normally make your experience of that city better than the reality of living there. Therefore, I'd like to stay at a place as close to an actual place and location I would rent if I move there. I would rent first and take plenty of time to get to know the areas before I buy. Also, I'm big into gym, biking, swimming, ect. I'd like to be able to walk or bike to most things. Any comments on these areas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

You say you'd like to stay somewhere as close to the actual apartment and location that you would like to rent if you move here, but nobody here knows you yet so its hard to know where you'd like to stay, what price range you're looking at or what style of rental you will be interested in.

Most expats want something along the lines of what they would rent back home, as a result many like to live in condos Pocitos. If you check out the page mvdapartments .com, there you will find some listings for short-term rentals in Pocitos/Punta Carretas. There is also the Bremen aparthotel in El Centro (link below).

Its hard to get a feel for a place in just a week, but I guess time limitations always play a part. Best of luck and let us know how you get on

The Punto Berro Hostel in Pocitos seems to be getting popular... they may have private rooms available and may give you a deal for longer stays. I also see they have a ramp so they may be accessible for those that need that.

Hi Foodie,

I have pretty simple needs. I don't need a huge place. A one or two room apt in the neighborhood of 500 sq. feet would be more than enough. Stove, microwave, fridge, ect. Clean, quiet, fast internet, easy to walk to get food, (I'm interested in buying and preparing fresh fruits and vegetables from a stand) a gym nearby would be awesome. Swimming pool would be a great nice to have.

I could actually stay longer but I'm concerned about having enough to do while I'm there, and thought I would make my first trip a bit short. But maybe you are right, a week is probably not enough. I really appreciate your help and suggestions. I don't speak any Spanish, so this is going to be interesting!

Mike

Thank author of this post/comment"Getting to know Montevideo"

Hi Mike,

I really believe its very very difficult to get to know a city in just a week, especially Montevideo. Some cities jump out and grab you, they're in-your-face, Montevideo is calm and subtle...YOU have to find IT.

I'm sure you would be happy in any of the apartments recommended, try some of the individual privately rented places like Marisa's apartment or some of the others on mvdapartments website.

What is it that has you thinking about moving your life here? Because that is what you want to be "researching" while here. The expat community is very friendly and welcoming, try out the Friday evening meet-up at Atlantico or the Sunday group at Fellinis. Apart from that I would just recommend walking around a lot, getting a feel for different neighborhoods and the way people live life here.

Mike,

I have to dissagree with some posters about proposals in or near the Center like the Bremen or the Palacio Durazno. The Center is OK, but any Montevidean that can afford it would certainly choose some place near the beaches from Punta Carretas to Carrasco. There you have even different choises from a more "urban" ambiance next to the Center and with all the stores and services at walking distance like Pocitos and Punta Carretas, to a more "suburban" ambiance in Carrasco, Punta Gorda and Malvin, where homes with gardens is the norm (though you also have apts available). For swimming and gym there are abundant offering of clubs through the coast. For walking and cycling, the Rambla (Avenue and walkway boarding the shore), will be your paradise. I would start aiming to Pocitos. I'm not sure that a rented apt is appropiate for a one-week experience. Equiped apts for rent are not that common in Uruguay, your choice would be limited. Most apts for rent in Uruguay are unequiped. Besides, one week won't be enough for you to know the environment as to solve the practical issues of living alone. If you have just one week I sugest you to stay in a hotel. Though your experience in a hotel won't be so near to reality as you point out, staying one week in an apt won't make much difference. The experience will be too short to get the idea. Montevideo has four different seasons (you are coming in Autumn) and each one may be a completely different experience. Also, in one week you won't have a complete experience of what you will get or loose by moving to Montevideo.

If I were you I would take it easy, use that week as a preliminary approach, go to a hotel, and then decide if the city deserves a second experience at a rented apt with no less than a couple of months. Try the Ermitage Hotel at Pocitos, in front of a Plaza, with a Rambla view, and public bus stop in front of the hotel.

Thank author of this post/comment"Limited Choices"

Like you said Alberto, the choices for a furnished apartment that you can rent by the week are slim, so people weren't necessarily telling him where to live as opposed to where there are things available. I highly doubt you will find anything available for one week in Punta Gorda, Malvin or Carrasco.

Not to mention that the centre is not an awful place to live, I believe Mike is a young guy and looking to experience the buzz of the city. Without a car places like Carrasco are a bit of a trek to anything in the city, not to mention things are more expensive out there and its harder to integrate because it is an area of private houses with gates.

I'm a little bit tired of everyone immediately saying Pocitos. Yes it is the obvious choice, but not everyone is obvious, and I think visitors should be able to make up their own minds rather han being told what is best for them. Not everyone likes to live in suburbia.

I now see I should have explained it better. I was trying to explain the options where to live in the first place (that's why the subject I used). I considered that Mike was trying to have an experience as close as possible to the actual experience of living in the city. So I figure out that the first step was to choose the kind of neighbourhood that better suits his preferences and way of life, and use the week to experiment precisely that area; in a hotel. Mike told us he liked walking, cycling, swimming and gym. Specially for the first two, there's nothing like the coast. As I said, the Center is OK too. But I do think not the better place for the way of life and interests Mike describes.

About Pocitos, it may be obvious, but the reasons that make it the obvious choice are exactly the ones make everybody recommend it to newcomers. For Mike, having exactly one week to dedicate to the City, obvious choices are much usefull than adventuring into choices that are not for everybody. Let Mike find his way to his perfect place. He doesn't even decided for the country. Pocitos anyway is a confortable base for exploring the rest of the City.

I don't personally live in Pocitos cause I think it's not the better place for me. However, I was trying to recommend the "obvious" just for practical reasons.

Elaine, maybe we could interchange experiences about the different neighbourhoods. I think I don't understood at all your post and some of your considerations. However, I figure out that would go beyond the threads subject.

Thank author of this post/comment"Pocitos/Hotel Good choices"

During my last visit to Uruguay I noticed the differences in the Centro area compared to when I lived there. The City in my opinion moved to the Coast not just Pocitos also Buceo, Malvin, Punta Gorda.

For Mike the Hotel should be the best choice. When buying a Ticket to Uruguay from California he will get a better price if he combines the Airline Ticket with Hotel.

The Pocitos area will be also the best place to stay. Lets not forget that Mike is only staying a week. From Pocitos he will connect to other parts of the City including the Centro with no problem.

I'm also thinking to live in a Hotel during my stay(2 or 3 months)if I can get a good deal from some Hotel in Pocitos. My thinking is that if we're going to move around Uruguay, probably it would be better to pay only once not twice for the same week (Any opinions?)

Alberto is not a Pocitos resident? My Uruguayo experience is telling me that he is not too far.

I've noticed that many people seem to have a preference to the neighborhood they first stayed in.

No, I'm not. I was, when I was a child. But it has changed a lot. It's become too "urban" for my taste. I chose to live in appartment but with more open skys. I don't like to have curtains closed so your neighbour in front cannot take a look at your intimate life. However, I still think it's a good neighbourhood, and depending on the particular location, it could even be great.
