I would like to know when the school year starts. For example, I would like to know the month or a specific date. Also, I would like to know the summer holidays, too.

I think that the school year usually starts the second week of March and ends the second week of December. I think the time varies for private schools.

I think that it is up to each district to decide on the schedule. I am not sure about when the kids have summer vacation.

The summer months are Jan., Feb. and March. I guess the students are out around these months. Are you planning to attend school in Uruguay?

"School vacation."
Roughly from mid-December to mid-March, depending on the year. It does not depend on the district, it is country-wide. However in public schools of the poorer neighbourhoods (called "escuelas de contexto crítico" or critical environment schools), there are also classes during the Summer. In these schools during the Summer the classes are of a more extra-curricular content (more plays, group work, sports), and is also used to review some of the subjects of the previous year with the children that need it, so the field is somehow leveled again for the "slower" ones before the next year begings. This system is due to the fact that: a) families in those social areas are not prepared to support their children's learning process, so the school takes their place; b) the children of some poorer families depend on the school for part of their feeding (the school give them 1 or even 2 meals for free), so they cannot cut that support in Summer.Note that appart from the Summer there are other vacations: a 1-week Semana de Turismo (Holy weak), a 2 week mid-course vacation in July (Originally thought in the XIX century to cut the flu annual peak; don't know if this is really usefull these days), and a 1-week Spring Week in September. • Page 1 (Original Post) •
