Spanish Tutor?

Hi,

I just moved to Montevideo (Barrio Pocitos) and would like to take private spanish classes away from a school. Can anyone recommend a private spanish tutor? Also, do you know what the going hourly rate?

Thanks in advance for you help.

Joanna

Thank author of this post/commentHi Joanna!

Welcome to Montevideo :) When did you arrive? I'm Irish and I got here in October 2008. When I first arrived I took a great intensive Spanish course at La Academia Uruguay (they also have a branch in BA, Argentina)

Their prices are a little more than some of the others on offer in Montevideo but you'll understand why when you go there. The school is clean and modern, class sizes are small and levels are well divided. Also all the lecturers are highly qualified - they are experience teachers, hold relevant degrees and they are all native Spanish speakers.

The other alternative might be SpanishUruguay, I haven't taken classes there but I intend to start in a month or so as it was recommended to me by an American guy living here.

I would strongly advise you against La Herradura School in Pocitos. I know MANY people of different ages, backgrounds and interests and they have all said the same thing - disorganized, classes are over filled, levels are mixed which either prevents progression or causes confusion and teachers don't seem very qualified either.

That's my two cents! I hope you like Uruguay so far...if you feel like meeting some expats we have an enlgish-speakers lunch every Sunday in Pocitos. I've added the link with some information below. Hope to meet you soon :)

Thank author of this post/commentI'm not sure that Juan speaks much/any English, I've only ever spoken to him in Spanish...try the contact us facility on their website, they usually email or call fairly promptly

Thank author of this post/commentI think Joanna was asking "private Spanish classes AWAY FROM A SCHOOL"

It seems all the answers were about a school... maybe someone can recommend some of the private tutors... I think some of the Uruguayans that go to the Sunday meetings do some of that tutoring.

Thank author of this post/commentThanks for all the recommendations.

To answer Elaine's question (Sorry to post this direct response, but I tried to email her directly but for some reason it didn't work): My husband and I have been here for a little over a week now. I am down here doing consulting work for an environmental nonprofit in the US (over the internet) while my husband does his dissertation research. How long have you been here and what brings you here? And thanks for your recommendations about spanish lessons. I am really looking for private lessons, but went ahead and contacted the Spanish Uruguay school anyway. It is a great deal! If it is easier, feel free to email me at joannawolaver@yahoo.com. Also, we went to the expat lunch two weekends ago. Where you there?

Look forward to hearing from you. Jo
