| I like that you give some nice details... a lot of property ads don't give any useful details... but to reach the American Tourist/Expat market promotion in English can really help.A lot of people "complain" they can't find short term rentals. I think it is because they are searching in English and not finding much. A search in Spanish might be a lot more productive. And from a property owners, perspective the opposite. |

Hey, last year I went to Uruguay and Argentina. I was worried because it was getting difficult to get an apartment in Buenos Aires. Finally I got one, near the downtown which was beautiful. After that, I crossed the Rio de la Plata and enjoyed Montevideo. South America rocks!Mark |

| "I am looking for a Holiday Rental in Montevideo"
Dear All, My partner and I will be spending 2 weeks in Uruguay in December. We are looking to rent an apartment in the centre, possibly in 'Ciudad Vieja' or somewhere nearby. Do you know anybody (no agencies please), who does let their apartments in Montevideo to tourists? Many thanks Regards, Miguel |
| "Individual Apartments for Short-term Rent"
Hi, Miguel. My site (below) lists websites of places that offer apartments for short-term in Montevideo. Some are agencies, but others are individuals who put up their own website. The list is roughly in order according to the number of apartments offered by the site, and the last eight on the list in the "Short-term apartment rentals" section are individual apartments. Some of them might still use agencies, but it's a place to start. Also check the list of links in the right-hand column, under "Other places to search." Some of those sites are places where anyone can add their own independent listing. I hope this helps! |
| "apartment for November 2010"
comment # 18. I was just looking at your site, Shirley. Very practical with accessible layout. Now, it's nice to talk to you about something other than guns, for a change. I have been making contacts through Buscando Casa but have found, in some cases, the listed price increases once contact is made. As well, I have, just now, contacted two potential leads in the site you post. What isn't clear to me and, because it's likely a regular process there, no one seems to adequately explain it but how and when does one pay for the electrical consumption or telephone use? Is it somehow calculated on the last day? My plan is to come for the month of November 2010 and I am looking for a one (or two, depending the price) bedroom, somewhere not too far from the centre of the city, say, el Centro, Cordón, Barrio Sur, Palermo etc., with a balcony and laundry machines and a quieter location (I don't want to be two floors above the main drag). |
| "Renting "
Thanks for the kind words, Bik. Yes, self protection is only one of my many and disparate interests! :-) Prices going up immediately upon your showing interest seems to be a common phenomenon here. It even happens at the table on closing day during a real estate sales transaction. I haven't heard of it happening for any of the apartments or agencies in my main list. If I do find confirmed instances of one of them not going by their published rates and practices I will remove it from my list. Some of the apartments include electricity and phone in their flat rate. For the ones that charge separately, my understanding is that they find out the accumulated usage on the last day somehow and settle up at check-out. Maybe they read the meter at check-in and again and check-out? If someone else has gone through the process, please chime in. |
| "Demand for Lodging"
By the way, for renting in November, don't delay too long to make a reservation. I know of two different people who were not able to get their first choices of lodging for that period because they were already booked. One was looking for a hotel and one was looking for an apartment. |
| "Book now!"
comment # 21. Thanks for the advisory, Shirley. As it's my wont to procrastinate, any extra prodding is appreciated. |
Comment #2310/03/10 16:12Rural east Colonia departmento | "Utility bills"
"If someone else has gone through the process, please chime in."In the case of the two properties I rented down here during the early stages of my house rebuild, in both cases we read the meters at the start of the term and read them again when I quit the properties. |
| "Utility Bills"
With a little longer, short term rental, ie: 6 months (though I renewed the 6 month leave a few times and was actually there about 20 months) this is what happened on "checkout" day:My real estate agent asked the owner if he had my deposit (3 months rent, not officially deposited in the bank). The owner said no, because the electric (and other) bills hadn't come yet. My real estate agent said we would just keep the eyes until that time. The owner then rushed off to get the money! My real estate agent then totaled up how much I had paid for utilities BEFORE I moved in (ie prorated the first bills I paid) and then estimated the prorated amount of unreceived bills. The difference came to about 400 pesos. When the owner returned my real estate agent presented her calculations to him which he accepted without any deep thought and we offered him $1, 000 pesos to covered any balance which he accepted and I left with my full deposit. Hopefully for very short term vacation type rentals they have a more straightforward process. It would be a good idea to be very clear on the process, unless of course everything is included. If you are staying someplace for a bit longer, 3 months or so and are planning to move here it could be a very good idea to change the electric to your name. It is quite easy. The reason to get the electric in your name is that places that want a verification of your address (possibly, banks, cell phone contracts, etc) ask for a phone or electric bill.
