As a small farmer myself I love the term "organic" as it implies that inorganic foodstuffs might be mined or assembled in a factory somewhere :-) There are accredited "organic" farming schemes within the ROU which are available c/w appropriate labels from better supermarkets in MVD. We even have an organic veggie counter in my local shop but you usually see the very same produce on the non-organic shelves as well. I lost 4k U$S earlier this year trying to grow a crop of "organic" wheat which became infected with an interesting selection of deadly fungi so couldn't be sold for human nor for animal consumption and had to be burned. Generally speaking artificial fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides and insecticides are expensive here and because we lack all the subsidies available in the US and the Eurempire, their use is much more limited in the ROU. Certain crops (like soya) require lots of chemical inputs but most field crops and other produce receives much lower doses than ooop north. Most of the beef is grass fed on unfertilized pastures and injecting cattle with growth hormones is almost unknown. On a recent visit to Europe I was struck by the lack of taste in the food I ate there. You don't realize how tasty ROU food is until you have to eat inferior foreign muck :-) |
| It is amazing to hear that there are still farmers who is trying to be conservative the way they put up their plants and has the courage to use organic farming. It is a good example to everyone especially to those developed countries coming from a small country that not all is using chemicals in farming but they still practicing and still managing the type of farming they practiced. I personally belief with their cause and hoping that more people will be enlighten. |

Sad to say since I first arrived here 4 years ago, agriculture has been going through massive changes. My neighbour Luis had a 40ha (100 acre) dairy farm run on traditional low-input lines but with the low prices for milk producers, the high cost of transport, the increasing difficulty in finding skilled farm labour and the high prices for soya, things are now changing fast. Luis has sold his cows, sacked his workforce and as I look out of my window, I can see him out with his JCB busily removing field boundaries, trees, bushes and anything else that might impede the big machines which will be planting, spraying and harvesting his proposed soya crops. Unless farmers are very rich, very poor or very stubborn, market driven changes are the only option available to them. |
| I find it interesting that organic foods cost a premium. Since they are grown locally, transportation costs should be lowered. Since organic foods have no preservatives, that is less cost to the producer. Where are these savings when buying organic foods in the grocery store? |
