Looking for apartment in Montevideo. Advice?

Hi! My husband and I are moving to Montevideo at the end of February and are looking for an apartment to rent for three months. We would love to find a one or two bedroom place in Pocitos or Punta Carretas close to the rambla and with internet. We hope to spend no more than $650 a month with all gastos, etc. included. Is this reasonable? Also, can anyone recommend an apartment? I have contacted a few places with listings on BuscandoCasa.com, but haven't heard back from many. I am wondering if they are all on vacation now...Anyway, thanks for any and all advice you might be able to offer! Take care, Joanna

PS-I will also continue checking out some of the older postings with apartment rental advice.

Thank author of this post/commentHey Joanna & Husband,

Pocitos & Punta Carretas are very nice areas, but because of this they are also the most popular and hence the most expensive!

I have found that apartment prices here can really fluctuate month by month so its almost impossible to give an accurate average (especially for those areas because many people are willing to pay inflated prices to live in those areas!)

$650 is reasonable for your rent (between $500 and $700 is the norm but you might get a really small place a little cheaper and you may pay a whole lot more too). Gastos Communes (communal building costs) vary so much...from 400pesos (about $16) anywhere up to 10 or 12, 000pesos (aound $450). That cost depends on the building, whether you have a doorman, whether air conditioning is built in to the structure etc.

As for buscandocasa.com that really is the best resource (in my opinion) for getting an idea of the apartments available and at what price. Did you write your enquiries in spanish? Because most inmobiliarias here don't have English speaking staff so they simply won't reply if you write in English!

Here's another website you check out for more property listings...good luck!

Thank author of this post/commentHi Joanna,

Elaine is right. Pocitos and Punta Carretas are more expensive.

Your main problem is that you want to rent only for 3 months. This is not a very common procedure in Montevideo, although the requests are increasing considerably. In Pocitos you can get an apartment for USD 400 to 450 (one bedroom) rent plus expenses on a yearly basis. For short term rentals you will have to add minimum 40% and then you will have the expenses. There are chances in these two neighborhoods but I donīt know if you will find elsewhere this possibility.

Regards,

Peter Stross

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 82989367
