I have apartment in Montevideo
Montevideo, Uruguay

In 2005 I bought an apartment on Rambla Gandhi, near 21 de Setiembre. I live there about 3-4 months a year; usually December-March. I return December 15. I am very pleased to find this totaluruguay.com web site as a vehicle to meet a few people and have some interaction with English speakers once in a while. I'm learning Spanish as fast as I can, but the going is slow.I know the Old Maz Restaurante very well and look forward to meeting people in December. My trip from USA this time will be by ship from Fort Lauderdale, November 19, and arriving in Montevideo December 15. Thanks for the web site and also the web site maintained by Southron. By the time you make it back, we may have Old Maz overflowing into your apartment.

I just discovered this site through the wonderful Southron's site. I live in California, but quite fascinated with the same idea of spending part of the year in S. America. Owning an apartment is a challenging task, wonder if Dan can share some of his precious experience with us? A trip by boat down south also very interesting--well, maybe only some odd ball like me will consider this interesting. Gordon

Do you mind my asking how much you paid for the apartment and what size it is? Are you interested in renting it out when you are not there?Just curious as I may know someone who would be interested in renting it. How much approximately, does it cost you to stay down there for 4 months at a time and does it pay to have it for only that short time and leave it vacant for the rest of the time?

Hello Dan.. We bought ours in 2004... Small world isn't it. Which side of 21 are you on? East or West? We're East.. halfway to the Ancap.

Dan's is the other away.. away from Ancap... about half a block I guess.

Closer to the oceanside restaurant. But equidistant to Old Maz :-)

Oceanside restaurant? I must be hungry because I zoomed right on in on that one. Is it seafood? What all is on the menu? What is the price point?

It's the closest restaurant to where I lived (just moved). Been there a few times.. as a resident, I tend to avoid it during the winter.. you lose the ambience of the beach at night.. the torches on the beach.. the girls doing the torch dance most nights.. The range in prices in restuarants here isn't like it is up north. This restaurant would be considered higher end compared to a restaurant like Old Maz... Yet, the price difference is minimal. It usually costs us $250 per person to eat in a good restaurant... a higher end restuarnat like this could take you to $300. My wife usually has a glass of wine. I dont. I posted a restaurant experience on my blog last month for a high end restaurant in Pocitos. The bill was $3500 for 10 people... we ordered the more expensive things on the menu, unlimited desert bar... very, very nice place.. everyone had wine. Hey, I guess that's where the extra $50 per person comes from :)

Your really gonna scare some people without mentioning that the dollar sign $ means pesos here... and about 24 of them equal a US dollar... so you're about about $11 US dollars when you say $250!

sorry Lee... usually it's obvious... but unless you spot the $3500, you could very well think it's like Manhattan costs :)

It might also be worth noting that in Costa Rica you could get a meal out for about 1/4 of the Montevideo prices... but there is no comparison in the food. The main problem with eat out in Montevideo is that you get too much good food.
