Forum Post02/07/12 15:33Where it is freezing cold... | Evenings and Events in Montevideo (Advices) Hi!I will be with my girlfriend in Montevideo (I speak some spanish, she doesnt at all) 21st-23rd of February. So we will only have one full day and two half ones. I guess most of the days we will spend just doing sight-seeings and relaxing a bit (as it is between Buenos Aires and Rio for us). What I would like to ask you now if you have any advices what we could do in evenings. Any insider advices on special places to go to enjoy wonderful evenings. Might be unusual places with great view to chill out the evening (but no clubs please) or might be places with funny events or anything unusual or simply to spend a nice time. Of course also day-recommendations are welcome. Anything which you dont find in a usual city guide which is worth doing while being in Montevideo, because all information I could find so far are for sight-seeing and shopping, which is nice but I think there can be much more in a holiday :) Therefore I would be great for all recomendations. Thanks a lot! |

is the local carnival.During February, in all the neighborhoods you can find street stages with shows (at least 4 different shows in each stage). I suggest you google: Montevideo carnaval Murga, parodistas and nubolos are 3 different kind of shows (there are more, but I am not a fun so I am not an expert). If you don´t understand the language you will only appreciate the customs, and the colors. Much of what they say is "laughing" about the politics or social situation. The ticket price may go from U$S 10 and on. Your hotel or hostel can give you information about one near where you are staying. I suggest you go to youtube to get an idea not to loose your time, I know there is people (and specific artists)that come all over the world just to see this cultural expression. Take into account that some "evening activities" in other cultures, are meant to be done late at night in Uruguay. Some of them, like night-clubs, really late! If you are thinking of chilling out at sunset or shortly after it, go to the Rambla (the coastal walk). Pocitos is one of the places where many people go to go for a Rambla walk, to chat with friends, walk the dog at the beach, or simply sit and watch the sunset. Later, you may go to Fun-Fun, a traditional bar where you can have a drink and snacks and listen to tango singers or candombe performers. The Fun-Fun is at the border of the Ciudad Vieja, near the Plaza Independencia, at the back street of the Teatro Solís; the show starts at 10 pm). Night clubs don't start before midnight, and many people really show in at 2 am. |

Ah! And though it can be fun, don't think the name has anything to do with the English word. When you ask someone for directions, you must pronnounce it "foon-foon", stressed in the second foon. |
