Coming to Uruguay for 30 Days in April

Thank author of this post/commentBefore I relocate to Uruguay from Kansas City in the fall of 2012 I plan to visit for 30 days in April to research the area and make sure this is where I want to live in South or Central America. My research tells me this should be number 1 for me.

I have been told April is the off season and that vacation rentals should be much less. I think I want to rent a house on the ocean or nice size 2 bedroom apartment in downtown Monteviedo?? I am open to all suggestions!

Can anyone out there give me any suggestions or contacts to find a place to stay for the month of April 2012?

Cost wize is this the off season and are the rates lower?

Thank you,

David Dent

Thank author of this post/comment"Off Season"

I've never really noticed an on or off season for rentals in Montevideo. For hotels, around Carnival there is probably an issue.

The beach communities are another story, but I also believe in some of those people don't even bother renting to rent outside the in season. So pickings will be slimmer.

Short term rentals are always a challenge in Montevideo. Good luck and hopefully someone will have some good suggestions.

The first week of April it's Holly Week, called "Semana de Turismo" or "Semana Santa" in Uruguay. Is one of the preferred times of the year for internal tourism, and a lot of Argentinean tourists is also expected. This specially applies for the East beaches and for the thermal resorts on the Northwest. However, Montevideo would be very quiet since many people live. So that week you'll probably find higher hotel or rent prices and eventually difficulty to book in the more touristy places. I agree with Glen in that Montevideo prices don't change significantly during the year. However, while hotel rooms would be readily available, it could be easier to find a furnished apartment for short time rent in one of the beach towns rather than in Montevideo, since owners in the city are more aiming to long-term rents. Anyway, if your intention is to decide whether migrate to Uruguay or not, you should rent in places according to your plans. Beach-town life is completely different that Montevideo life. You will see that after the Semana de Turismo ends, beaches will become mostly deserted. That's the case for most of the year (the exeptions are summertime, the holly week, and some long weekends).

Thank author of this post/comment"Local Rental Agent"

In Montevideo, it seems that the rental agents specialize in local areas, so if you can find one in the area you want to live in, that would help. Also, few areas actually have short-term rentals. Montevideo Central, Ciudad Vieja and, of course, resort areas. If you want to rent in the Ciudad Vieja area of Montevideo, you can try cascoantiguopropiedades (google them). One of the agents, Arndt, speaks English (he's actually German but move here 5 years ago).

Thank you very much Jerry for your suggestions. Clara and I appreciate this very much. Clara is relocating (from Venezuela) with me to Uruguay and will be coming in mid-April for the 30 day visit. I think it will help since she is a ntive Spanish speaker who has a good command of English. I gave her the cascoantiguopropiedades site to check out for us. Again thanks, David

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 1839610064
