Classes
| Classes I will be in MVD for Dec and Jan and I want to fill my time learning new things. I fear that many places will shut down and not hold classes while I am there. So I am asking your advice on good things to study those months that doesn't require special equipment. Some of the things I am interested in are windsurfing/sailing dancing art and I know this sounds absolutely ridiculous but... ITALIAN I am doing so poorly in Spanish I might as well try Italian and really confuse myself. It might actually help. :P Any suggestions for different classes/subjects that are fun during those months? welding? I saw the link to the gov't site but there isn't much listed. Stretch my brain. Gracias Patt |

MVD is a mecca of tango...however it is true that some activities become more scarce in winter. |

Still can't get used to the fact that the cold winds come from THE SOUTH. |

What still gets to me is the sun going right to left rather than left to right :-) |
| "Activities in Montevideo"
Hi Patt, Montevideo is even more tranquila than normal in the high summer months of December and January, but I think you would be hard pushed to find any day or month or the year where you cannot take tango classes! There are dance schools of all shapes and sizes dotted throughout the city and they teach many different styles of dance. As for watersports, you can't really do these in Montevideo as we're not on the ocean...you could probably sail but if you want to surf, windsurf or kite surf you have to go a little further up the coast, somewhere like Atlantida or Piriapolis may be far enough, but I think even further at Punta del Este or La Paloma are the best places. As for art....Montevideo is overflowing with artists, I have no doubt there are art workshops available, I will ask around and see what I can find out. I was going to suggest getting onto the couchsurfing community and asking there but I see you already have :) Let us know what you find out from them! |
| "outdoor art classes"
Patt I know a lovely Uruguayan artist called Sisto Pascale and he is going to run outdoor art classes this summer, sounds perfect! (don't worry, he also has a big studio in case it rains!)He has lots of experience running classes so they should be of a very high standard. These are his phone numbers tel. (02) 411 75 66 cel. 099 68 32 07, or his email is sisptall at adinet dot com dot uy. He speaks excellent English. His website is here (but still under construction) |

Thank you all for your responses.CS gave me info on Italian classes. Now - tango - I know I should like it but...maybe the few classes I took I just didn't have good partners :( I like folklorica dancing and have asked where I can find penas and classes but haven't gotten a response from my other groups. I know myself - I need to keep my mind and body busy so any and all suggestions are welcome. Isolation is a real killer. gracias otra vez. besotes |
| "Classes in Montevideo"
I was going to recommend International House (on Avenida Brazil, near Libertad) for language classes. They teach Spanish, English, Portuguese, Italian, French and Mandarin Chinese...and when I went there to inquire about classes before the staff were really nice and the place seemed very organized and professional (which can be rare in Uruguay!) As for dance...like I said, most of the dance studios do multiple types of dance, not just tango. They also do salsa, jazz, modern dance etc, and if they don't do traditional dancing I'm sure they can point you in the direction of somewhere that does. Next time I'm walking past a studio I will take a phone number (I think its highly unlikely they'll have a website, those that do will probably be very expensive and tourist oriented). |
| "Dance Classes in Montevideo"
I walked past a dance studio in downtown Montevideo yesterday and saw that they do all kinds of classes - hip hop, contemporary dance, salsa, ballet, latin jazz, capoeira, arabic dancing and more! If they don't do folk dancing I am sure they would certainly know a place that does! They also offer theatre classes, comedy, singing and acrobatics! It is on Soriano no.888 (on the corner with Convencion), its a very short walk from Plaza Independencia. It seems like a pretty professional place... |
