Bicycling
| Bicycling Has any of you guys did any bicycling in Montevideo? My friends and I would like to do a little bicycling around the city. Do you think it's a good idea? |
| I was thinking the same thing about bicycling. I think it would be fun to try it out. I guess if you stick to well know paths it should be fairly safe. |
| Yes, I think it would be fun to go biking in Montevideo. You should take the same precaution that you would take walking. I would watch out for the drivers. |
| Yes, I think it's a great idea. I was thinking about renting some bikes and finding some parks to visit. I am really into bicycling. I do a lot of bicycling on the weekends. |
| I don't bicycle much but I will try it. I think you should to take the same cautions as walking around town and don't be flashy. |
| Where are some nice trails located at in Montevideo? |
| One piece of advice: Please wear a helmet. These roads are very dangerous, especially the taxis, with a total disregard for cyclists. I've already been hit by a taxi and ended up in intensive care. I was very lucky. But surprisingly no one wears helmets and puts lights on in the dark. This should be made a law for cyclists. |
| Bicycles as an alternative to car in Montevideo. Even Unesco is in this. Very interesante! |
| Many of my friends (Uruguayans) cycle in Montevideo because they consider the bus fare of 15pesos to be quite expensive when taking it twice a day (or more). There isn't really very heavy traffic in Montevideo but what traffic there is is not very orderly. People drive in 4 lanes when only 3 are painted, they take sharp corners and pretty much do whatever they like...its not the safest place for cyclists but many people do cycle so maybe its just a matter of practice. One thing you would have to consider is the security of your bicycle. There's a lot of theft around Montevideo, simply chaining it to a pole outside is not sufficient, it probably won't be there when you get back! |
| "Bicycle rentals"
I´m wondering if there are any places in Pocitos that rent bicycles by the hour or the day? |
| "Biking in Montevideo"
There's a place called "Bicileteria Sur" that rents bikes. They're in Centro, I think its on Yaguaron and Durazno. Their phone number is (02) 9010792. They're open Monday-Friday 9-1 and 3-7, Saturday 9-3, but I doubt the staff speak any English there. There is a posada in Ciudad Vieja that offers bike rentals. It is called Posada al Sur, it is Perez Castellano between 25 de Mayo and Washington. Their phone number is (02) 916 5287. I'm pretty sure most of their staff speak good English and could help you organize a rental. If you're really interested in biking then this website below might be of interest to you. If you do go biking let us know how you get on so we can help other people try it out. |
| "Montevideo, Bicycle Rental"
We know a Uruguayan couple who has opened a bicycle rental shop. They have new bicycles and are in the process of adding a few bicycles for children. They are also looking to add infant seats. They are developing a trail guide mapping biking routes with places of interest, tourist sites, restaurants they like, internet locations, shopping, etc. The shop is located a couple of blocks from the Mercado del Puerto on Perez Castellanos at 25 de Mayo. I don’t know a lot about the bus system but it is on the “CA” line, a block away from the “D” bus stop, and a couple of blocks from many of the bus lines that go into Ciudad Vieja area. They speak Spanish and English. For more information you can reach Fernando at 099 184 377. |

I'm also interested in more info on biking around Montevideo. I'm more interested in Mountain biking in areas near Montevideo. Does anyone know of any groups that gather for cycling - other than the group organized by Trek? |

oops - I see that Elaine already posted the same info about biking here.I checked out the shop in October and no they do not speak English but are patient and very helpful. You will need 3 things - a phone number, your document and the address where you are staying to rent a bike. I met with URUBIKE also. As they met on Sunday and I did not have my bike as it is in Buenos Aires I went just to meet the group. I was loaned a bike for a bit of the afternoon to explore while they were running fun little races and obstacle courses by the coast near Parque Rodo. They go many places so if you have Facebook join the page. They go off road and on road. I hope that helps. |
| "sounds like fun!"
Thanks for all the info and updates Patt and Sandy, I'll definitely try it out someday...and hopefully soon because the summer is the perfect time for a bike in Montevideo as the (already light) traffic gets even lighter and there is a really relaxed vibe around the city.Keep us posted on any events or gatherings! |
