B & B in Montevideo ?
| B & B in Montevideo ? Hello, For my first visit in February, I would like to stay in a B&B in or very near Montevideo. Is that possible ? On my list I mentioned to meet you on the expats get together and will book my flight according to the date of the meeting. Looking forward to it ! If there are no B&B's in the city or near... would any of you suggest a nice and not too expensive 3 or 4* hotel ? Thanks for helping me out! If you come this way, don't hesitate, I'm here ;)! |
| "B&B in Montevideo"
Hi Dany, I saw your pictures, is the whole family moving to Uruguay or just yourself and your husband? February is a lovely time of the year to come...the weather is still really nice but not too hot. Carnaval is happening all across the country and there is some life in Montevideo again after the December/January mass exodus to the beach! When you say B&B I'm not exactly sure what you're looking for. There are plenty of hotels around Montevideo (some very old and dull, some very new but its like sleeping in a cardboard box with no character). B&Bs (I think Posada is the closest word to that is Spanish) are a bit more rare but there are a few. There is a small place called "Una Noche Mas" in the Parque Rodo district of Montevideo (which is central but still quiet) and I have heard good reviews of that one |
| "Posada in Montevideo"
There is also a fairly new place in Ciudad Vieja that looks nice called "Posada del Sur". My only concern with this is that it is quite far in to Ciudad Vieja which sometimes isn't comfortable to walk around late at night. However it is not a "dangerous" area - this problem can be easily overcome by taking a taxi home in the evenings rather than wandering. In fact many would recommend this for a lot of areas in Montevideo, and taxis aren't very expensive. |
| "Hotels in Montevideo"
In terms of hotels...I would be skeptical of star ratings! Some are small and basic but good standard, some are awful, and some are overpriced for what they are. It is easier to find reviews for hotels because they have more of an internet presence and therefore many tourists have used them.I know many people who have stayed at La Ermitage or Pocitos Plaza. The Ibis Hotel is a budget hotel and I'm told its serves its purpose and has good prices....however in my opinion none of these have much character and don't give you any taste of Montevideo. That's just my personal opinion however, they are nice places nonetheless. |
| "Bed and Breakfast"
Hello Elaine, thank you for answering my questions. No, it's only me who's coming to visit Montevideo but my son might come as well ...if he gets some time off... I will keep you posted about my stay and hope to meet you then. By the way, when I opened this forum today I was surprised to see the pictures of my family displayed right on the front page !! My picture however was kept aside ... lucky me ! I wish you a nice day further. |
| "Coming to Montevideo Alone"
Hi Dany, You're very welcome, I hope you find the information helpful. If you're coming here alone be sure to drop in to the expat meeting on Sundays, there are usually other travelers and newcomers so you will no doubt find someone to go exploring with. As for your photos...no need to worry, once someone uploads some new ones it bumps yours down a few places :) |
| "Your blog"
Hello Elaine, I just went through your blog and found it very interesting indeed. I love the way you write and puts down your thoughts. It's nice to share all this with others ! My son is looking to invest in a "new" studio or little apartment to rent out. As he has no time to sort this out he asked me to do it. As we say in Belgium " the ape is now on my shoulder " ha! That's why I'm visiting Montevideo and some apartments for him to chose out. I have never been to Montevideo and thus I have no idea of where the interesting spots are for putting long term rentings on the market there. Google maps/earth helps me out quite well though and I do understand/talk a very little of Spanish. I know that it's a horrible bureaucracy state but in that case France is a leader as well. I moved from Belgium to France with the whole family and since then moved 7 times in France only. Anyway, for the moment, we are not moving but we will visit Montevideo regularly in the future. Happy to have found you here ! |
| "Life in Montevideo"
Thanks Dany :) I assume your found the link through my member profile? When I was researching my move here in early 2008 there was really little to no information (and NOTHING in English) on the internet. The growth over the past year alone has been phenomenal! Its wonderful to see! I started my blog to write about the simple stuff people want to know - what is available and what isn't, how do you find an apartment here, how do you go shopping, where is nice to eat, where is safe and where isn't etc. I don't write very often but when I get a chance I try to add something that will inform and help another new comer...it was my little version of good karma, "paying it forward" :) I'll try keep it up.... |
| "more questions..."
You did well dear !I'm still trying to find out where it is safer and where it is less... and of course if you have any good address for a nice meal, I would very much appreciate :)! I intend to invite my son properly, as I see him only once in two years ! I miss him so much. A bientôt = c u ltr |
| "Restaurant Recommendations"
Dani there is a post about restaurants in Montevideo on my blog, but I would be happy to recommend some places for you...I'm not sure what kind of foods you like or if you have special requirements (vegetarian etc) but my favourite places to eat are: - La Otra: this is a parilla (Uruguayan grill) and it really is my favourite in town (though there are many good ones!). It is on the corner of Juan Maria Perez and Tomas Diago in Pocitos. There is another lovely parilla in Punta Carretas, I think it is called La Pulperia. This is on the corner of Colonel Mora and Joaquin Nunez (a block or two from Punta Carretas Shopping)...though this one is very small and intimate and you have to sit on high stools at a small counter to eat so it may not be for everyone, personally I love it. - Downtown in Ciudad Vieja there is a place called La Pasionaria. This is an art studio/clothes boutique/artistic bookstore and cafe. The cafe is great! They make wonderful food and pay attention to detail unlike any other restaurant/cafe I have been to in Uruguay! (and their prices are good too!). This is a tiny door so you have to look out for it...it is on Reconquista in Ciudad Vieja, between Juan Carlos Gomez and Ituzaingo. - For the best empanadas in town go to La Taberna del Diablo on Gonzalo Ramirez (on the corner with Pablo de Maria). This is the Parque Rodo district. Hope you enjoy them! :) |
| "where to eat"
Bookmarked your blog. I need variety. Here's a suggestion from me - one that has lived in Argentina for over 4 years and loves her Argentine beef. I have to say that Saturday I had... THE BEST CHIMCHURI with a fantastic ASADO (not my usual choice of meat when dining out) EVER. I was doing an intercambio for lunch and the Uruguayo picked the place. The meat was like butter on the teeth and the chimicuri spicy enough for a yanqui. Give me garlic. My kingdom for some ZIP. Los Lenos - San Jose 909 |

Thank you girls ! Bookmarked it as well. The day I come to MVD I'll be prepared as any other ...watch out ! I will know a lot of things thanks to you all but I won't have found the best deal for the best studio/apart for my son ...haha and he is the one who pays for my ticket & stay !! Have to look at Palermo as you said... Merci c u |
| "Places to eat out in Montevideo"
This is a great website with many restaurant listings in lots of different areas...but its in Spanish but for those who don't speak a word, under "listados" in the left hand menu you can choose to see restaurants alphabetically, "por zona o barrio" - by neighbourhood, "los mas comentados" - the ones with most comments (though this could go against you - what if all the comments are negative?!) or "cocina mas buscada" - the most often searched. After that just go by the star ratings, take down the address, and let us know how you get on! :) |
| "Welcome to Uruguay"
Hi Dany:Good to know you will be visiting this beautiful country. I am not sure if you are French or Belgian. I lived in Brussels for a couple of years, many years ago, and I keep very good memories of that beautiful city. I speak quite fluent French so if I can be of assistance, glad to help. As you said, Elaine's blog is great and extremely helpful. You can find some more information on Uruguay in my blog (see link below). Kind regards, Alejandro |
| "Una Noche Mas"
I checked your site looking for recommendations of places to live/stay in MVD and saw Una Noche Mas, kudos it was a great review and a place to stay. The owners are welcoming, the place is clean and nicely kept.and in a great area in Punta Carretas/Pocitos near everything. Great for long term stay. Thanks a ton!!! |
