| Arándanos, blueberries -- where have you gone? this has been a strange summer for fruit. Cherries, at least in Pocitos neber appeared at less than $180 per kilo. Then there were blueberries (arándanos)which appeared in October at about $40 for a plastic flat of 125 grams. Then prices started falling until the point three weeks ago that flats were selling at 3 for $50, while bulk arándanos went for $70 per kiloat the Friday feria on José Martí. Then, suddenly -- Poof! No more arándanos! This is a truly strange result for a hydroponic crop. Any ideas -- or, even better, info about what happened? Expert Page: Enjoy life a bit at Feligreta |

An acquaintance of mine grows them down by the river so I called him. He tells me that his blueberry season is over. |
| "They told me the same at the nneighborhood frutuería.."
but, also I recall several of the little plastic flats had inserts about the virtues of hidroponica. While I can believe the berry season ended for field-grown fruit, I can't believe that the hydroponic growers quit at the same time. But, then again, Patrick, you would know whether my assumption that this would be a year-round indoor crop has any basis in reality.Expert Page: Enjoy life a bit at Feligreta |

I would have thought that the higher costs involved in hydroponic production would have made the growing of blueberries non-economic but I've never grown them so I really don't know. It is usually necessary to control the day length to persuade such crops to fruit out of season so maybe there is somebody with big poly-tunnels and artificial lights somewhere in the ROU. On the other hand there are hundreds of square kilometers of hydroponic veg grown in the desert around Almeria in SE Spain but veggie production does not require the artificial light... just many thousands of unhappy Moroccans working for peanuts. |
